I've been trying to buy
this rifle from my buddy.
He doesn't hunt, and will never
use it.

What is a fair price?

It's clean as a pen, and I want it.

One of the best grouping out of the box rifles I ever saw was a 788 in 6mm rem and with factory 100 corelocks to boot. I'd 600 was good place to start. Does it have a 4x weaver mounted?

I owned a 788 in 6MM and sold it mostly because I am a lefty and it was a right handed rifle.

it was a shooters dream. Very accurate.

It seems that everyone I know that has a 788 has a 4x weaver on top. It was a very popular scope back then. Both were very inexpensive.

Back in my firefighting days, our house man bought himself a 788 in 30-06, his first big rifle.

I used to tease him bit about his "cheapo" Rem as i had a few 700's at the time that i was right proud of. That was until he proved to me, just how well that 788 shot. I told him then and there to never sell that rifle as he'd have a really hard time finding another that shot 1/2" groups right outa the box.

The 6mm cartridge did me well for about 10 years and maybe 25 big game animals from several states. I always thought that it was a touch on the light side but i was shooting it thru a Browning B-78 single shot with 28" octagon barrel. I liked the combo a lot, the little 6mm did itself proud.
