Cerekote

Who is using cerekote as a metal finish on their rifles?

Can you give me your experience with scratch/wear durability and corrosion protection?

What colors do you like on a rifle?

Black is probably the most popular but I was thinking of a titanium grey to have something a bit different.

Any users of this product out there?

LAST EDITED ON May-21-15 AT 02:07PM (MST)[p]I've got several rifles Cerakoted, most in Graphite Black. I have one bottom metal for a stainless rifle coated in Satin Mag that looks pretty much like the Remington SPS stainless finish.

As far as preventing rust on a CM action/barrel its great for that, I have one CM rifle coated and no worries when I'm in the rain, which we get plenty of in Oregon:) Its the rifle in the 2nd pic - bottom one.

It holds up fine, I always tend to get nicks in hard edges from field use. Like the muzzle or the trigger guard/bottom metal, those edges get dinged pretty easy even when done properly. Here are a couple, both graphite black.

The bottom rifle looks black in the picture, its actually a mix of graphite black and titanium, its sort of a dark grey black but looks good IMHO.

They sure look good, Mr OM. Thanks!

It sure looks good with the cerekote on the fluted bolt body but how does it wear? My bolt will be fluted also and makes me wonder.

Maybe I'll Kote the handle and shroud and not the body (just leave it un-coated like it's always been).

Thoughts?

It holds up pretty good actually on the bolt, I get a couple scrapes on the them but nothing bad even after several years of use.

Good to know.

Maybe I'll just have the whole dang bolt done since I like the "blacked out" look on the flutes.

Thanks for the response.

Who is doing the bolt flute?? I always send all my stuff to Karl @ Kampfeld Customs. IMHO Karl does the cleanest work & is just a heck of a nice guy. His prices are not bad either.

Yessir.
Karl has done work for me before.
He's now in Sand Point and I have not used him since he moved.
I have an email in to him but haven't hear back quite yet. I'm sure I will.
Thx again. That really helped me.

Yup, I talked to him about a week ago, seems to be liking it in Idaho, the new shop is all done and his house will be shortly. I always just call him - don't think he's much of a computer guy but he almost always will answer his phone. If you decide to have anything cerakoted I'd have him do it as well, his coating is always perfect.

I have it on my McWhorter and cerekote seems to be far better than teflon and the other coatings, but it wears and scratches easier than the advertising says it does.

One of my favorite hunting rifles needs refinished and I was planing on cerekote ,but after having it I'm going to see if I can find someone who still does stainless bluing.

Stay thirsty my friends

I've had Accurate Plating and Weaponry do Matt chrome on several rifles.
The finish is awesome but sometimes a guy wants something different than silver metal ....plus they'd need more time to complete the job than I have right now.

I have everything falling into place so I don't want to have to rush load development. No panic, just want it done in plenty of time.

All else fails, I'll take a different rifle to chase ovis!

Thanks for the replies!

Good tip OM,
I just got off the phone with Karl.
I'm in good shape and he'll take good care of me.
Thx, Zeke

I've used a few coatings and currently use cerakote now. It hold up very well and is easy to apply. It does wear in a few spots like stated. Next bolt I am going to try black ice coating on the bolt and cerakote the rest of the rifle.

Here is my 243 in tactical gray I just coated.

Nice rifle there Cahunter!
That's about the color I've got my eye on.
I'm still torn on what to do with the bolt body.
I'm leaning toward just leaving it raw.
Hey, at least the finish wouldn't wear off. Ha

....now if it will just shoot "those" bullets that won't shoot for 440!

Thanks, guys, for the replies.

Nothing wrong with leaving it raw. Is it stainless? Steel? Could always just clear it. Cerakote makes a clear.
For grey colors I like the tactical gray and sniper gray. Both are a darker gray than titanium. What color will the stock be?

Mostly black with grey rocker-coat over-spray for pattern and texture... not so dissimilar to yours.

I've done several stocks like this in brown, black or green as the base color and they turn out pretty nice. I like the splatter effect and love the texture.

The barrel is stainless but the action is not. However, the stock bolt body comes from the factory "in the white" (on this and many rifles) and I've never had a rust issue even in very wet conditions.

Zeke

That's an option but the action needs re-finished... badly. The action is chromoly and the barrel is stainless. Cool combo, just like my 308, but I'll go ahead and do the whole thing.

The action comes from an '06 Imp and it's seen it's fair share of time on the mountain. (brother's old rifle that I built 100 years ago) So if I finish the action I might as well do the barrel since it will see "sheep" duty this year! (I hope the sheep only see the business-end of the muzzle)

It's all fun!
