Nosler LRAB

My buddy and I spent the whole day working loads in 3 very accurate rifles with the LRAB since I finally got some in .264. we tried 270 150's in a 270 WBY custom, 264 129's in a pre-64 Westerner and 30 190's in a custom 300 Win Mag.

To say the least I was unimpressed, they sucked actually. in all 3 rifles no load would produce groups under 1.5 MOA , most were closer to 2 MOA. velocity readings were higher than with ballistic tips in al 3 guns too. I think the bullet is too long without enough bearing surface. or, maybe a different twist will be required?

When we swithced back to ballitic tips all 3 rifles fell back to their usual sub MOA groups.

The LRAB is a very impressive looking bullet I had high hopes for but after this I am completly done with them. maybe this will save someone the $50 a box it cost to shoot shotgun patterns. if you have to see for yourself I'll make you a deal on some crap bullets.

Good luck. we tried different powders and different charges. it's been my experience if a known accurate rife won't shoot the first load you try with a new bullet you're wasting time trying another. but I wanted this to work bad.

I've read on other forums they didn't shoot well, but I had to see for myself. I suspect a faster twist would help since they're so long .

They shoot good out of my 280AI
You have to try different seating depths. every gun is different.

First 3 LRAB's I ever shot in my life, 200 yards. Not great but OK with the equipment I had.

I just tried the 190's in my Mcwhorter which shoots 190 Bergers at .388 and Ballistic tips at .550. nice to have your own range .

LRAB was 1.10 and that's the best group yet from 4 guns.

No doubt some guns will shoot them but I'm done. o for 4 is bad medicine.

Many observations like mine with these bullets. Berger has nothing to worry about.

WapitiBob,
That looks more like a 5-600 yard group! The group should have been much smaller at a mere 200 yards. LMAO

That's a fine group Bob! They evidently shoot in your rifle. Well done.

I picked up some 150 LRAB's for my 280 AI but have yet to shoot them. They "should" be about right with my 9 twist Lilja.....but ya never know how they'll shoot in a particular rifle until you actually shoot them. They look cool but that matters nothing if they don't shoot in your rifle. We shall see.

Sorry, 440, that they didn't work for you.

Are they the 142 LRAB? I just built a 260 ackley and am in my load development stage right now. I wanted to try these out but swallowing that $50 pill is hard to justify at this stage in the game.

I to agree that the LRAB are very finicky and can be very hard to find groups. Some have suggested that leade angles in most rifles may be to steep for them. Inflated bc on most bullets also. I have taken a deer with them. For me I will stick to Berger hybrids.

What was wrong with the ablr bullet on deer?

LAST EDITED ON May-27-15 AT 04:44PM (MST)[p]Travis, there are 129's I don't think the 142's will be out for a while. it took me this long just to get the 129's. I would say, the 142 is going to be a mile long , my rifle wouldn't even hit the target board with them. a faster twist will be required almost for sure. what is your twist?

It might be a long wait for the 142's Nosler will use them all in their factory 26 Nosler loads until they get stocked up. or until people find they don't shoot as good as a Ronco bullet whichever comes first.

For what it's worth I talked to a Nosler employee off the record ( I live 30 miles from Nosler ) and he said accuracy has been an issue with these bullets. the slower you push them the better they shoot I guess. I don't know why and I'm not going to try it but with non magnums maybe they will work for you.

Muzz
I have only taken 1 deer and a pig with the LRAB. Neither were a pass thru and not much penetration on the pig. That being said the deer was a clean 1 shot kill. I just don't trust them longer ranges and had unexplained flyers multiple times. My Berger load shoots better and is extremely effective.

I have tried them with two very accurate custom rifles, with 1.5 MOA results. Not great. I found them to be finicky too......one group 1.3", the next with same rifle 2.75". I got tired of messing with them. My 2 cents
