I have a chance to buy one for my son. I looked up the serial number and it looks like it was made in 83. It's a new gun. It has just set in the guys safe the whole time. It has a walnut stock and blue barrel. Never had an M70 before. This will replace his Ruger American that he has been using. Pro's/ Con's? What's a fair price to pay?

The Winchester Model-70 XTR Featherweight was made from 1984 to 1994. It is a decent gun and was popular when it first came out. My gun traders guide books are somewhat outdated and listed a high of 495 to about 350 bucks. I would add at lease 50-75 dollars on to that due to the increase of prices since my book was published. Take that as a "WAG", wild a$$ guess.

I have one like it in 270 that's a tack driver, but I wouldn't count on that.

Good guns actually , but when the controlled feed action came back out they became less popular.

Stay thirsty my friends

Around $400 is right, they are solid rifles. In the 1980's Winchester rifles lost a bit of their craftsmanship and started to show tool marks etc. but were still good guns. The trigger is one of the simplest and strongest designs; easy to adjust also. I have several made during those years and have never had a failure or issue of any kind.
