Going to have a custom rifle built, and wondering what your opinions are on these two calibers. I have narrowed it down to a 7mm or a 300wsm. Which of the two do you like more than the other? What one do you believe is more inherently accurate? Going to mainly use this for muleys and maybe an elk here or there. This will most likely be my only custom build so I want to make it count. Thanks

Hard to beat a 7MM Remington Magnum. Several long range bullets available for it, will kill anything and ammo is less expensive and more widely available. An inherently accurate round. That's why I chose it for my last rifle.

I have never been a 7 mm fan. But I know a lot of the long range companies out now do. Like Gun Werks and several others. With the quality bullets we have to chose from these days. I guess the 7 mm is coming around to being a great shooter.The one thing to look at is down range energy . That where the 7 mm fall off a bit. Especially for elk size game.
The big 30 calibers have a better choice for all around bullet choice.If this is your one do all custom rifle. I don't know why your a comparing a 300 wsm to a 7 mm ? There are a lot of other great 30 calibers out there better then the 30 wsm. I like the old 300 win mag better then the short mag.
If you have a custom gun builder in mind ? You may want to speak to them on what they like to build. Listen and go with them or go with another builder. As of the last few years there seems to be a lot of guys out there building custom long range guns. So if you have any buddies or friends that have used there rifles go and shoot with them and see if you like what they put together. What part of the country are you hunting or living ? If you can go to some of these shooting school. They can teach you a little about the rifle they are building for you. It may help you in the long run. For us old guys ;-) it took us a long time on our own tinkering with loads and what not. It may have been a year or two before we got things dialed in where we trusted a new set up.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-28-15 AT 12:16PM (MST)[p]I have a couple customs and in my opinion, the cartridge you choose is not as important, especially between those two, as how comfortable the rifle is going to be in the field.

If you are not into shooting at deer and elk so far away that they don't know that they are being shot at, go with a lighter to carry rig and you won't regret going heavier as i did with my first, purpose put together rifle. It now stays in the safe most of the time because packing the thing around just got old.

Just because a loaded rifle-scope setup only weighs 7 pounds ready to roll, don't mean it can't shoot itty-bitty groups and lights out in the field.

BTW, for a light weight custom, between the two "cartridges" given, i'd go with the 300WSM.

I'm going to assume you meant 7mmWSM or 300WSM ........I think you should flip a coin.

Thanks for the response guys. I meant 7rem mag, the balistics are very similar to that of the 300wsm. Kinda leaning 7. Most the ones I've been around are shooters. Have a 257 now that I really like for muleys, but 1000 yards is really stretching its legs.

Go with the 7mm Rem Mag;

- Caliber gives very good performance using a wide range of grain weights on a wide variety of game.
- Ammo reloaded or purchased is less expensive and available everywhere.
- Feeds smooth in actions (I've heard some WSM ammo had issues).
- 7mm's are noted for long range accuracy, (rifle, ammo, and shooter skill are factors).

I have one and consider it a go-to rifle for a mixed bag hunting trip. Hope you get/build a great rifle!
