6.5 Creedmoor

Anyone using a 6.5 Creedmoor?

I need another rifle about like I need another hole in my head but one more won't hurt, right?

A friend gave me a 700 SA fiberglass stock from Brown Precision (my favorite plastic stock maker) and I have a few short action 308's and 243's that would convert easily, with a new barrel, to the 6.5 Creedmoor.

I know it's not the speedy 6.5 X 284 or the 6.5 WSM race-horse (both are better served in long actions) but I was thinking of a mild little LR rifle that would be an easy build, fun to shoot and excellent on deer-size game. I have my wife in mind. At least that's my weak impetus for the new build.

FYI: It will propel a high BC 130 gr AB at about 2950 fps.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

the 6.5 creedmoor is a great round! Plenty of room in the mag box of a SA to run 140s also. I would run it 8 twist and 24".

That's exactly my thoughts (8 twist, 24-25' barrel, up to 140's). I might go back to Lilja for my barrel. I have a couple others of theirs and they sure seem to shoot well for me.
It's not the speedy 6.5 X 284 but it should be a fun little mild round to play with, I think.
My wife really doesn't care but I'll use her as my excuse for another rifle! She won't care what I spend if I tell her it's hers. LOL
......now if I could just get her to pop for the new barrel and scope.... ha

I've pondered this same thing numerous times and I keep coming back to the 6.5X47 if one is using a Remington SA. The longer high BC 140s will work in a standard Remington SA in 6.5X47, but not in 6.5 Creedmoor. I know there's kits to lengthen the mag length, but I never had any of those feed reliably. A Winchester SA def yes in the Creedmoor. Oh course you stated 130 ABs...they'll work, but why limit yourself. Drawback to the 6.5X47 is brass cost...better brass, but way more expensive. But what do I know, I built a custom gun that greatly limited my bullet selection too. Either way sounds really fun!!!

30hart,
6.5 X 47 is a viable option. We have that reamer too.
I'll have some time to ponder the question since it'll be a few months until the new barrel arrives and with either chambering the 8 twist is the direction I'd go.
It should be another fun build and a sweet little toy either way.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-14-15 AT 04:44PM (MST)[p]The 6.5x47 is a good design also but uses small rifle primers. The oal of the 6.5x47 and 6.5 creed are almost the same. Case length is almost identical also.

Zeke nothing wrong with lilja barrels! I just picked up an 8 twist bartlein for my 6.5saum build. Never used one before but have high hopes.

The Bartlein barrels are all the rage right now and everyone who shoots one says they live up to all the hype. I don't see how you can go wrong with that barrel and the 6.5 SAUM speedster.
There are so many cool choices out there right now!

It will be months?? before its done but I'll post pics, groups and details along the way.

My bolt will get sent to Karl Feldcamp for body fluting and handle skeletonizing within the next week or so. It makes them shoot 50 fps faster! LMAO. Okay, it just looks cool to me.

I always enjoy taking a peek at others rifles when they are willing to share.

Bart' 5R do seem to live up to the hype. I like the 6,5x47L a tad more than the creed, but they both do the same things..the creed will work fine in a s/a rem, if you give a little bit of thought cutting the throat.130 JLK rates a hard look.

Here is a 6.5 Creedmoor of mine. C series Rem 700 LH short action with a Hart #2 24" 1-8 twist barrel.Stock is a McMillian Remington classic adl 13.5 lop standard fill 50/50 black and orange. It will shoot incredible groups out to 500. I can't see well enough to take it out farther but I'm sure it would group very well way out there!! Bare gun weighs 6.5lbs

>Looks great.....who did your smith work?

I totally agree with blacktailBC! It's a great looking pea-shooter! There's lots of expert work in that rifle and it's evident just looking at it!

Thanks for the kind words fellas. The bolt was fluted by Karl Kampfeld and all the Titanium and Graphite cerekote work was done by Eddie Fosaugh.
The gun smithing was completed in Missouri.
The rifle will outshoot me all day long and is a pleasure to hunt with and shoot. It is a deadly round on Axis deer. I'll be hunting some WT's after Christmas back in Texas with it and I can't wait! Take care guys and Merry Christmas to all!!!!
