Don't want to clean gun

My gun shoots more consistent when its had about 20 rounds threw it. Supplies are hard to find. I would rather not clean it now that the hunt is over. Is there a concern about the bore becoming damaged if not cleaned. Does anyone leave their guns dirty during the off season?

Back in 69' when i bought my first deer rifle, just about every time i'd take it out of it's case for a scouting trip or a long walk, i'd take it to pieces, clean, oil, and love it up the best i knew how.

That rifle didn't ever change point of impact, to this day it doesn't, if i've taken it apart, year to year, cleaned it or not. I have to think that is fairly rare as i have others that POI does move around a bit if i take it apart and give it the once over that i used to do quite often back then.

Nowadays, i don't get the satisfaction nor enjoyment that i used to keeping my shooters extremely clean. That, and the fact that i just don't shoot near as much, hand guns excepted, as i used to, i'm likely to go thru them all but once a year before the season and call it good unless my groups on one or another start to open up.

If your gonna be storing it run a lightly oil patch and store it. When you get ready to shoot again run a patch through it. Most people do way more harm to a barrel cleaning it than just shooting it. Continue to shoot it until accuracy falls off. I've got a barrel with 200+ rounds and still going.

I over-clean my rifles but do so with great care.

Like has been said, way way way more rifle are "cleaned" out than shot out and there's nothing wrong with a "seasoned" bore. Also. like already posted, run a light oil patch down the bore for rust prevention and dry-patch a couple times before you shoot it next.

Rifle barrels are like women, they're all different and your job is to figure out what keeps them happy.

Oil it and put it away unless you have the skills and tools to do the job right.

You should never go over 20 rounds or put a rifle away with a dirty bore , according to the experts. I see no reason to doubt them. if your rifle shoots better fouled in you're going to get that back when you check it before season. so clean it now.

Zeke makes some good points , which are covered in this article . if you want the low down on rifle barrel cleaning there isn't anyone who knows more than this man. I have two of his actions and one of his rifles and they're works of art.
