Cerakote

I just got my 300 WBY back. The gunsmith does a good job building but hasn't figured out Cerakoting yet. I do know another smith that does a good job. Take a look at the pic, it's actually hard to tell there's a problem except at the right angle. The rifle shoots fine, so I worry if I mess with it, it might cause accuracy problems. Is that stupid? If I take it to the other person, will it perform the same as when I took it there? With the bbl free floating, will a new coating affect that? Is there something I can do myself to blend it in better?
Thanks

It shouldn't change a thing if you have it redone by a good Cerakote applicator. The bad stuff would get bead blasted off and properly cleaned and a new coat would be applied. When done correctly Cerakote isn't a thick coating so no worries on how it could/might change the bedding or free-float. I've had a couple rifles redone that are bedded and all came back shooting exactly the same.

For a couple of the best check with Eddie Fosnaugh @ Fosnaugh Customs or Karl Feldkamp @ Kampfeld Customs, both do super work and great guys to deal with.

Captain. I think there is something else wrong with that rifle. It looks like they got the bolt on the wrong side. ? It looks like a good shooter and not a show piece. Just enjoy that good shooting gun. As you are in the field you may blend in those rough spots on your own. I think you are right. Every time you make a change on a rifle. It takes a while ti get you head right again. As long as the gun is protected from moisture , I would saw your good ! Enjoy shooting that rifle. Did you just have that break installed ? Does it soften the recoil a bit ?
Good luck John

BIGJOHNT, the smith installed the brake with the barrel. He also installed a decelerator pad. It does soften up the recoil a lot. I'm kind of new to custom builds of my own and this is my first magnum rifle. This rifle started out as a stock CDL 300 RUM I bought used. The recoil was too much for me. I only fired about 20 rounds. This smith talked me into building a WBY. So far I really like it. It's not real heavy and that's what I was aiming for. Something practical to carry long distances. Like you said, shooter and not a show piece. The coating kind of bugs me, but the stock is not without a few small flaws.

Recoating it shouldn't harm a thing. Imo I'd leave it. My rifles have scratches and nicks because I hunt and use them. I would find another gunsmith if your not happy. Looks like he didn't blend the muzzle break very well either if at all. If it shoots good it's only cosmetics though. Nice rifle and caliber choice!

Captain,
The photos aren't clear enough for me to see the problem with the finish but like Big John said, the bolt is on the wrong side! The "smith" made a big mistake there! LOL

Okay, back to reality.
I'm not trying to be contrary but any time the finish on a rifle is changed, it is no longer perfectly bedded for that gun. It may or may not make a difference, in your case, but if the gun gets a new finish I'd re-bed it 100% of the time without fail.

Just my 2 cents,
Zeke

Iam going to sound a little bit dumbbell but what is this cerakote? It seems like everyone is having thus done to pistols and rifles

Cerakote is a ceramic based coating available in a wide variety of colors. It's a bake on finish that is pretty durable also.
