I am about to embark on the first semi-custom long range hunting rifle build, and am torn between these two calibers. My objective with this rifle is to be able to consistently take game (elk and deer primarily) at ranges of up to 1000 yds max, (I am not interested in debating long range hunting ethics, so please do not post comments of that nature).
I want to try shooting the LR-Accubond, as I am impressed with the BC of these bullets. That is providing they are still getting good feedback when the rifle is completed.
168gr would be the target for the 7mm, and 210gr would be the target for the 300 Win.

So, in your opinion which caliber/bullet will meet my objectives most effectively?

Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

My set up is 7MM RM shooting 168 gr Berger VLD. The down range numbers on the VLD are very impressive. My personal experience is killing only paper so far but there are many that have killed that far and farther with this combination.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-13-15 AT 08:21AM (MST)[p]There's a guy over at LRH that has extensive experience with the 215 Hybrid on elk. Might want to take a look. If it were me, I'd stuff the .300 with a "regular" 200 grain Accubond. mtmuley

I am not opposed to that either mt. Those numbers on the LRAB are pretty impressive however.

Dead is dead. Both will get the job done perfectly on Elk out to 1000.

One may will make it more dead than the other but not really. :)

If it were me I'd probably go with the 7 mag just because of the ballistics that caliber provides.

I would go with the 300 win and the heavier bullet. I like to see 1500 ft lbs of energy on elk or more. On the 7 mm it is starting to fall off that at 1000 yards. Mtmuley is talking about bros on the long range hunting fourm. It's a pretty good read on the 300 win mag shooting 215 grain Bergers. After reading that I have start to load up some 230 grainers with my 30 caliber. I think you have a better bullet selection with the 30 cal. I have tried the Nosler and was having a problem getting them to group. I may try again when I have more time to play around with it.

WOW! I just finished reading 54 pages over on LR shooting about "bros" and his 300win mag with the 215 Berger hybrids and I'll say that I am sold! He is getting extreme velocities out of them with H1000, and they had 19 one shot big game kills in the first season.
Looks like I'll be going with the 300 WIN, and 215 Berger hybrids.

Thanks for the input guys.

A friend of mine has been out to the ranch Broz manages and shot with him. Guy knows his stuff. They were testing prototype mono bullets my friend is making. If you do a search, you'll see where Bryan Litz put the ALR numbers where they should be. mtmuley

In my opinion the 300 Win Mag is one of the best hunting rounds ever to hit the market. for elk size game it definetly holds an advantage over the 7mm Rem.

Don't go into it expecting the long range accubond to shoot well. I've tried 3 calibers in 5 guns and they all suck.

215s and the 300win are sure a deadly combo. Jeff aka Broz is a great guy and I'm sure will answer any other questions you might have. Be sure to setup the throat for the 215s.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-15 AT 08:09AM (MST)[p]The important thing to consider when making your choice is your tolerance for recoil, mine is fairly high and I have both a 300 Wby and 7mm RemM. The 7mm is far more pleasant to shoot repeatedly and a 300 WIN would be more comfortable than the Wby.

I have never taken a animal with the 300 and I use 180 gr. in it; but have several downed animals from the 7mm using 140 gr. The closest was a elk at 250 yards and the furthest was an elk at 523 yards.

I reload for the 7mm but not the 300 because of the better performance in Wby factory ammo. Reloading for the 300 WIN would be very easy due to availability of components and ability to achieve high performance with various loads.
