Own a .17 Remington...seriously wanting to get one...I have military .223 brass up the yazoo and is it easily converted???
Love my Win Model 70 featherweight in .223 but I think I'm needing a new barrel after 6,000 rounds thru it...

I would stick with the 223.

I had one of the first 700's chambered in 17 and never really found a use for it or liked it very much. they foul barrels terrible and the little bullet is pretty much worthless .

The 17 HMR is a much better use of 17 caliber.

Longun,

You may very well need another "tube" if you've got that many rounds down it!

You can get quality barrels which will be very accurate and keep fouling to a minimum but you'll pay almost $400 and wait 6+ months to get it. Then you'll have gunsmith costs on top of that. Add the cost of a new cleaning rod and brushes and new dies and the price escalates in a hurry when we switch to a new cartridge.

I love new toys but we have to keep the cost and wait in mind when we add a new toy to our stable of rifles. Speaking of toy, the 17 is just that. It's a toy and has limited advantages over a good .224 caliber.

But who am I to tell a guy not to build one? Not everything I do make sense!!!!

Well maybe I'll just get a new barrel for my .223....just reading on ballistics of the .17 and liked the idea of no ricochet when shooting prairie dogs out to 200 yds...thats all i'd shoot with it..

I say if you want one, build one. .233s and 22.250s are a dime a dozen. Who cares what anyone else thinks. mtmuley

You still got prairie dogs? lol

The guys around here killed every one. There used to be 4-5 decent to good spots close by that a guy could take the handguns and 22's out and get a couple nice enough shoots a year but some of those devil guys, :), shooting heavy barreled center-fire's, found them and set up benches. Took two-three years but they got them, every one, they're gone!

LAST EDITED ON Dec-21-15 AT 05:40AM (MST)[p]Sage..there are still thousands around the big valley area..they had a bumper crop last spring..go some of those ranchers around and they would be tickled for you to come wipe them out...that's one of the main reasons my barrel is shot out..I went to the big Surprise Valley squirrel shoot out for about 4 years and shot a thousand rounds each time over the weekend...
I'm going to re-barrel my 223 and still have my heart on a .17 Rem---gun store in Cody has a unfired Rem .17 I'm seriously thinking about getting it but its SPENDY...what the heck can't take the money with you right?
