Rem. 700 sps vs sendero

I am planning on getting a Rem 700 7mm rm. I wanted to get the XCR 2 but it seems like they just discontinued it. I am trying to decide between the sps stainless and the sendero. Is the performance from the sendero worth the extra $600? What are your opinions?

What type of hunting do you mostly do? Do you want a lighter gun for packing or heavy rifle? The Sendero is heavy but does come with a nice stock and barrel. Every one I've ever shot or buddies have shot have been very accurate.
If you get the sps stainless will you be replacing the Tupperware stock?

I hunt mule deer in southern Oregon. I hunt elk in western Oregon where there is thick brush and a lot of hills. If I got the SPS stainless, I would probably get a Hogue stock. If I buy the sendero am I just paying for a better stock and barrel?

Yes you are basically paying for the stock and heavier barrel. The actions are both the same but the finish is a little different on the sps.
I'm not a fan of hogue stocks but to each their own. I'd rather use a bc stock.

Me and Mt disagree. The SPS is junk, get the Sendero. I've been down the SPS road. The two aren't comparable.

Just interested, what about the SPS that you had was bad? Was it just the stock or did it just lack performance in general.

Btw, thanks everybody for all of the feedback, it's been really helpful.

The SPS isn't junk. I agree the Sendero is a great rifle. Not so much for packing in the hills though. Lots of other models between the two. The new Long Range is proving to be a shooter. Still kinda heavy. mtmuley

In my opinion , the SPS is fine for most hunting out of the box . And being a REM 700 , future upgrades are endless .

+1 to Mr D6

My "Orange" 270 WSM rifle, that I just posted about in this forum, began like as an SPS. Other than lapping the lugs, polishing the bolt body and rails and a new Brown Precision fiberglass stock, it's still a basic SPS and it's shooting right at .75".

Nothing wrong with the sps models! The finish isn't the best but nothing a little cerakote can't fix. The Tupperware stocks aren't very good but I've bedded a few and they were all good shooters.

I still say that rifle needs a white cerakote job!!

CAhunter805,
If I get it too "candy" looking I'll have to give it to one of my daughters. I've already had a couple of them mention how nice it would look in their hands/safe. (I lose more good stuff that way).

FWIW,
Note: the plastic in the SPS stock doesn't lend it's self to standard bedding practices, but like Ca805 said, it can be done. Make sure you really rough-up the area being bedded and even dremel some little gouges so the bedding can mechanically lock into place.

If you're OK with the possibility of 1 1/2" groups, a pencil barrel that the mfg's testing showed needed forearm pressure to tame, a barrel that might or might not have all the rifling in it, and an action that might be kind of close to being centered with the chamber, go for it.

Mine was bad and the replacement was only slightly better, but 1 1/2" groups don't work for me. I bedded the action in a new stock, added and removed forearm pressure, messed with loads, did all of it, over and over. It was an important lesson; buy an SPS for the donor action assuming the gun is not going to shoot and maybe you'll get lucky.

Talk to the guys on longrangehunting about a Sendero vs an SPS. A Sendero, with the attention that went into it and the barrel they put on it, is far superior to an SPS. Had I bought one I would have saved myself a lot of frustration and some $$ too.

Good luck to you. I hope you get a shooter.

Oh yeah, and it shoots much better than I can. 162 Amax and RL-22 have been a great combo so far.

Waspo. Looks really good.

WapitiBob has a valid point. They don't all shoot well! I bought a 22-250 VTR and that thing was pure junk. It's long gone.
I suspect the Sendero rifles enjoy a bit more care than the cheap SPS but it's still no guarantee that the rifle will shoot sub-MOA.....but odds are probably much better.
Bob's point about buying the rifle and if it shoots, great. If it doesn't shoot, use it for a semi-custom build and you still won't break the bank.

Dang, these projectile launchers are sure fun to play with!

Thanks Zeke!

I'd have to agree with you - it is a bit of a gamble and not every Sendero or SPS will shoot well. Things would be a little boring if all rifles shot well without any work!

Just won a 700 SPS in .308 win. in a gun bash. I’m new to center fire rifle shooting. Used to live in a shotgun only state. That free (cheap) SPS is printing 1” to just under 1” groups @ 100 yds with 150 & 165 grain factory ammo. I’m not a skilled marksman like many of you. My guess is that the idea that you get some lemons and some lemon pies no matter what is probably true.

It's the internet! Oh course we're all fine marksmen! LMAO
