I decided to go with a semi-custom rifle and thought I'd go for something a little different while I was at it - I ended up going with a cartridge known as the 6.5 Sherman. It's similar to the 6.5 Gibbs, but has a longer neck and less case taper. Cases are made from 270 or 280 brass necked down to 264. Chamber with a nice crush fit on a false shoulder and out pops Sherman brass. I'm expecting 3200 FPS with a 140 Amax and at or near 3050 FPS with the 160 Matrix VLD out of my 26" barrel.
I had Dallas Lane, of Lane Precision Rifles, build this for me. He did an excellent job and it turned out better than I anticipated! He builds some pretty accurate rifles and I'm sure mine will be no different!
Build Specs:
- Trued Rem 700
- Greybull Precision stock
- 26" Bartlien light palma with straight flutes
- 2 Port mini brake
- PTG bottom metal
- Jewel trigger
- Talley light weights and a 6-24x50 Vortex HST
I finally had some time to test it out a couple of weekends ago and it did pretty good for a forming load with cheap 140 grain pills. At 100 yards and while breaking in a barrel, I'll take it. I'm sure with some tweaking and a higher quality projectile, it should tighten up even more. For anyone interested in more info regarding the round, here's a link to one of many threads regarding it: http://www.longrangehunting.com/forums/f19/6-5-sherman-q-125601/
Sorry for the sideways photos..
