.280 Black Bear load

Whatever your gun likes and shoots accurately. 140,160 accubonds,168VLD, 150nbt, 120ttsx all will get the job done easily.

The above is pretty good info.
I've shot one with a 280 and a couple with the 7mm Rem mag. I've only used the 160 Nosler Partition on bear in those two cartridges. They were never found wanting.

Thanks guys.
Think I'll go with a 140 grain Accubond
over more IMR 4350 than I'll say.
......a bunch of 4831 would work just
as well

140gr accubond over 60 grains of H4831sc

On a spot and stalk hunt I would stick to the controlled expansion bullets. Black bears aren't particularly hard to kill but most folks shoot to far back . A traditional behind the shoulder shot usually results in a gut shot bear . Their vitals are further forward than most think

D6native,
I'll have to respectfully disagree with your statement about the vitals on a bear. I would say the opposite. A shot to the shoulder leaves very little margin for error to hit the lungs or heart. If the bear happens to be quartering away when you think it is broadside a shot to the shoulder isn't going to hit vital organs. It happened to me once. All I got out of that deal was a sick feeling in my gut and a piece of shoulder bone. The next year I aimed about 4 inches behind the shoulder of my broadside bear and put the bullet there. Result: double lung shot bear that ran about 70 yards.

There have also been several articles on the subject, all of which recommend aiming more for the middle of the bear. Here is one such article: http://www.bear-hunting.com/2014/5/middle-of-the-middle-redefining-shot-placement

The critters have to win every time. I only have to win once.
