Sako A7 300 Win Mag - What Ammo?

I bought a Sako A7 in 300 Win Mag, and I was wondering if anybody knew what factory ammo shoots well in this gun.

To this point, I have only shot some Remington 180 grain accutip boat tails, and they are only getting about 1.5 MOA three shot groups.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Excavator,

I bought one of those last year and almost immediately returned it to Scheels after discovering that bullet seating depth (because of the clip)was no where near what it needed to be for accuracy. I paid a bit more and got a Sako 85 in .300 Winchester Magnum. Barrel break is important. I broke my barrel in using Bore Tech eliminator to clean it.

Because of the twist of the Sako barrel, I would stick to the 180 grain or so bullets. Heavier bullets may not shoot as well. I have had my best luck with the new 178 grain Hornady ELD-X bullet in Nosler brass using H4831SC powder. If you are going strictly with factory ammo, try some from Hornady using the 178 grain ELD-X. Your groups should tighten up dramatically. My hand load three shot groups can be covered with a dime.

I assume you did not draw another Wyoming tag. I know a few guys who have the 54-2 elk tag this year. The area you hunted last year is currently choked with smoke from the Hunter Peak fire outside Crandall.

Unfortunately this is so very true.

A few years ago, my brother and I bought rifles at the same time, same cartridge, same brand, same model, same twist. His shot everything well while mine would only shoot the heavier bullets for top accuracy. This is not an unusual situation. That's why we reach out to others for info but our own bench-work is crucial.

This^^^is why I reload.... Not just to save money but rather to find what works best in MY rifles.

Best of luck and have some fun on the way!
