Anyone have any advice on a reasonably priced ,but competent gunsmith within 80 miles of salt lake? I want to rebarrel my Remington 700 30-06 to .284 win. In a higher end barrel 27-28 long. I don't want to spend more than 1200.00 for rebarrel and truing the action.

Thanks for any advise.

If you can't find someone to your satisfaction just sent the whole thing to Krieger and have them blue-print and barrel to your specs.

They only barrel Rem 700's and maybe a couple others.

I usually order a barrel way in advance of needing/wanting it since most top-end makers are months out for delivery.....and then have my friend do the work on them for me. You can find someone locally in the meanwhile to do the cut, thread, chamber and crown.

Krieger of Lilja are my choices but Proof Research and Bartlein are top-cabin too and I've shot rifles which were barreled with them but don't own one.

Good luck,
Zeke

Not sure if Chad Dixon is still running his group buy but it's an awesome price if you order a barrel yourself and ship it to him. Do you know what contour and twist your looking for? What's the general purpose of the rifle?
Also any reason you want 284win over a 280rem? I'm sure both will feed from an 06 action.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-26-16 AT 08:36AM (MST)[p]Thanks for the replies, I'm not sure of contour, it will be a light weight pack rifle. 1:9 twist for longer, heavier bullets. The reason for wanting 284 is because it's different, and powders have come a long way. The 284 can almost match 7mm velocities with about 20 grains less powder. 1 in 9 twist.
