I've got a 7.62x39 bolt gun. My kids are gonna hunt deer w/it for awhile.

The pawn shop had some trade in ammo, some Silver (soft-nose) and Brown Bear (HP) ammo. Afterwards, I started thinking, I put a magnet on it...it stuck.

I has a copper jacket, but steel core, or something.

So, assuming that I never shoot that bolt gun enough to heat up the rifle...how bad is it to shoot it out of the gun?

It won't hurt it,it just won't be very accurate. Some ranges won't allow steel jackets bullets due to fire hazard from sparks.Winchester makes decent loads in 7.62x39 as well as others but I think the best load you will find in that caliber is made by Corbon

Stinky, I have the feeling you will buy that ammo based on price. If you want to get good quality ammo at a cheap price, go to the "Sportsman Guide" web site. Look up 7.62X39mm ammo made by PPU. It is made in Serbia and is brass cased, boxer primed, and they have two different soft points. One is a 123 gr. spire point and the other is a 123 gr. roundnose softpoint. The roundnose should be a very good deer load that will expand very well. Price is 10-11 bucks per box of 20. I have used it in my mini-30 and it is accurate reliable ammo. Sure beats the price of U.S. made ammo in that caliber.

I have to agree with RELH on the PPU ammo. All the pistol ammo I have tried from them was very good,on par with any US made ammo.I would not hesitate to try their rifle ammo for plinking.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-30-16 AT 11:30AM (MST)[p]I paid $10 for 50, in a plastic reloading type box....he had 2 of em and now he doesnt.
The silver bear is nickel or zinc brass w/a sp. The brown bear is brass.
Relh...did u put a magnet on that ammo?

Stinky, the PPU ammo is copper jacket with a lead core. No steel in the bullet and the case is boxer primed brass and can be reloaded.
