How many rounds

Dear Mbm1969

I suspect you "Could" get numbers of all sorts. It goes back "In My Opinion of Course" unto what the Mentors (Father's & His Friends) did.

As a Child I saw men take wire snips, cut the tips off on 30-06, M1 Garand ammo (FMJ Military Ball) and call them Dum-Dum's. They had one clip for the Grand and one for their Pocket. These WWII & Korea Veterans had solid confidence. They shot across Canyons in Western States and seldom fired more than one shot. All with Open Sights. They were flat out good with the ONE Rifle they owned and brought Home from War.

Jump into 2016 and it is rare to ever see open sighted Rifles. I am leading up to an answer. The best answer is whatever number of cartridges you feel you may need. How one feels is directly related to the confidence in one's Rifle and one's ability, possibly under stress, high heart rates, etc...to Deliver 1 hit, into the desired spot. Not a Volley of rounds, not a risky "AREA" shot, but 1 ....... single ..... shot.

I actually have left camp with one single cartridge. Mental Discipline should never be left at Home.

As has been said: "Ethics is what one does when No One is Looking".

Jagerdad :)

When I hit the field with a rifle, I have a deer elk bear mt. Lion and wolf tag. I have a full magazine, 10 on my belt, and a spare box in the backpack. I have as many as I will need, and will take the rest home

ammo is like fuel in an airplane... there is only too much when you are on fire

I will have four for the gun and twelve in the belt pack so a total of 16. If I do a fly in or horseback to a remote camp I would have 40 rounds with me but wouldn't be carrying all of those with me in the field. I think I took sixty rounds to South Africa and shot half of them.

I think 15 to 20 rounds would be a bare minimum for anybody.

A question to go along with this post is what is the most rounds you ever shot in a day while hunting.

I shot a whitetail eight times once.

Eel, you need to carry more ammo in case you run into Bigfoot. He may be hard to bring down.

I carry 2-3 in the magazine and 1-2 in my pocket. I usually have a 10 round shell pouch in my pack (which is always close by).

I honestly can't remember the last time I shot more than 2 shots on a hunt but it would suck to run out at an inappropriate time.

I hunt in grizzly country, I have had way too many experiences that required lots of ammo to scare the dang things off. I don't want to run out, but honestly a handful is usually enough for the elk, deer, sheep, etc. But one time in WY this year it took 30+ bullets to get the grizzly to realize he wasn't welcome!!! Pack plenty!

Dang mtncowboy, 30 rounds?

I think after a dozen or so shots I'd probably bear down and "bear down"!
Zeke
(Oh course I'm all talk but it would make me wonder if the bear was getting the message)

I grew up in the far north and as the saying goes, 3 in the air, three in the bear. never had to use it but i think thats pretty much how it would go.

Your reply was supposed to be "just one more than I need". LOL

That's about the qty that I carry also.

Zeke

It has always only taken one! Well until I hit that Bison. He took one in the lungs. Then one in the shoulder to keep him half way up the hill. :)
