How far do you sight in your rifles? 25 yards? 100 yards? I'll be sighting in my .243 and .270 and was curious to what your answer might be for yardages. I usually go with the ballistics on the box

LAST EDITED ON Oct-05-16 AT 10:47PM (MST)[p]I use a 250 yard zero on most all my rifles now a days. Also don't trust the box. Shoot out to distance to verify your specific rifle.

Here is the method I have used for 30 plus years !! All New scopes mounted & bore sighted If a gun shop & always insist they put a dab of Loctite on screws !! then take several boxes of ammo , various brands . Set up a target at 25 yards .. shoot .. rest 2 to 3 minutes .. shoot again .. & repeat once more { 3 shot groups } adjust scope accordingly . Once your shooting almost the same hole at 25 yards move to 100 & shoot several 3 shot groups with the various ammos note each group . DO NOT adjust scope once you have decided which ammo is giving you the best grouping move target to 200 yards .. Shoot 3 shot groups & adjust scope to tighten up groupings !! Also doesn't hurt to shoot some of the other brands at the 200 yards . Once you have your grouping down as tight as it will go Hopefully its at or under 1" at 200 yards move out to 300 400 or longer & shoot it will Amaze you how much of a spread that 1" group at 200 will increase at 400 yards !!

Thanks for the info. Greatly appreciate your posts. I had be told to to zero in at 100 yards and I had them 2" high on 100yards. Just wanted to find more info

My way: Both of my rifles are sighted in 2.5 or 3" high at 100. That puts me on at 260 with one and 245ish with the other. Confirm at distance. This way I know I can hold dead-on from 0-300 and 0-275ish, and hit no more that 3" high or low of POA with those rifles. One rifle is a .25 cal and the other a .30cal. The .30cal I know the bullet won't fall below 4" low at 300yds.

How do you adjust a scope to tighten groups?

You must be shootin' something really fast to achieve those results.

Most cartridges (279 and 243) will require a POI of 3" high at 100 and that should get your impact closer to LOS at 300 yards. Actually that should put your POI about 3" below LOS at 300 yards. Some guys don't like the 4" high mid-range so they want a POI at 100 yards of closer to 2" and just know they'll be low at 300 and dope a little for a shot that far. Lots of opinions and lots of options!

Hey, at least you're shooting your rifle a little. Few guys actually do!!!!!

read your adjustment calibrations on the turrets most are 1/4" at 100 yards if your hitting 2" high & right at 200 yards move your up & down turret down 2" & the left & right turret the same shoot again follow same method !!

I went out this past weekend to put a few rounds thru my 7mm-08 Just to make sure it was ready was SPOT on last year . 4 shots at 100 yards did not touch the target ?? Do not remember jarring or dropping it last year !! Moved in too 25 yards & was hitting almost 9" high at 25 yards !! dropped it down had 2 bullets side by side but still about 2" high So I moved to my 100 yard target 1st shot was still almost 7" high dropped it down shot again again side by side holes . Moved to 200 yards 1st 2 shots were low & left readjusted & the next 6 were all about an inch high & under 3/4" group with a little wind & rain . I would have never hit an animal past 100 yards had I not taken a put a few rounds thru it !!!
