460 Rowland?

I have the kit to convert a 1911 to shoot 460 Rowland. Do any of you have this kit? I was wandering if it is worth it or just a nice novelty. I have three 1911 pistols and I inherited the kit so it's not anything I planned on. I have the kit installed on a Colt Gold Cup Trophy, and wanted to hear from some 1911 people here because I hear that some of the 1911s are not strong enough to support that round. Of course I'm going to do more research before I start shooting, just wanted to ask here as well. I will post pics later.

I would consider installing that kit on another one of your 1911 pistols. Even with the heavier recoil spring installed, you take a chance of battering the slide-frame metal contact points. You do not want to do that to a high end Gold Cup. If you shoot the caliber very much, it will cause wear and tear on the slide-frame.
The Rowland conversion makes the 1911 into a handgun that could be used for hunting medium game and has more recoil then your standard 45acp +P loads.
I carried a Colt National Match as a duty weapon and used custom +P ammo as my duty ammo for several years. I installed a buffer and a 18 pound recoil spring to tame the slide speed down when shooting the 185 gr. HP ammo that was loaded to almost 1200 fps. I also restricted the amount of hot rounds I shot though the National Match and the gun is still reliable and very accurate to this day. The Rowland is even higher pressure then the ammo I used.
If you go to the Hodgdon reloading web site, you will find the reloading data for the 460 Rowland and see what it is capable of doing.

+1 to what RELH said. A .460 rowland would be a blast and I've wanted one for a while. If I was going to do it on a 1911 it definitely wouldn't be on my Colt Gold Cup. I would buy or use a 1911 with a forged frame that wasn't so expensive I didn't want excessive wear on it. A .460 rowland will batter a 1911 over time.

If I was starting from scratch (which you aren't) I'd do a high-cap conversion such as a Glock or XD.

The best thing about the rowland is it's near .45 win mag ballistics without having to go to the huge grip like a LAR Grizzly .

It would be an easy sell if you didn't want to keep and use it. I'm going to assume it's the Clarke kit.

It's the Clarke kit.
I will likely remove it and either get rid of the kit or hang on to it for future fun. I'm not really a pistol guy, I'm more of a rifle guy. I do okay, but could use help since I'm not the most accurate pistol shooter out there. The other two 1911s, I don't think will be used for this conversion. One is a WW II commerative that's too nice and the other is a new, never fired Para GI Expert that I'm thinking of making a gift to a buddy.

Real good info, thanks for the comments.

Any of you Remember Johnny Rowland and the Shootin Show?

I'll be your buddy ;-)

Lol deadi. I'm not the best person out there when it comes to gifts. Some may consider me a jerk. I don't give birthday or Christmas gifts to anyone except my mom. On occasion, I may give someone something nice. It's usually for no special reason like birthdays, it's just because. The person I'm planning on giving this pistol to is one of my best friends that has never received anything from me. He is kind of new to guns and really likes shooting with me and a few of his cousins. He is not yet a citizen, and I feel he is nervous about being around guns because of that. He is due for his citizenship test this year and once that is over, I would like to surprise him with it sometime after that.
