Need some opinions on what rifle you guys would suggest for my boy. I am dead set on a .308, but I am open on brand for the most part. I want to keep the price of the rifle (without scope) at or under $1000. My boys are currently sharing a Ruger American. It gets the job done, however I would like to get something a little nicer and maybe dad could use it for long day trips where I don't want to drag my 300WSM (my 300WSM is a heavy SOB). I have been looking at the Kimber Hunter and Tikka Forest so far, but I am open to other options other than Remington. I don't think to highly of their rifles anymore, unless you are going to up grade them.

If you want a rifle that lightweight I'd choose the Kimber. Be sure to check the front scope base screw length and front action screw length. Both are known to be to long and affect accuracy with kimber.
I'd also look at the m70 extreme weather. Weights a bit more but a great rifle.

Take a look at a weatherby vanguard. Reasonable price and pretty light . My son got one in 243 when he was 9 and he shoots it well , several big game animals to his credit. If your kids are older , a 308 or 7-08 will serve them well .

I'd look at one the Browning X-bolts, really nice rifles that shoot good and weigh under 7 lbs. Many different variations to choose from.

X2 ;)

I recommend the Weatherby Vanguard. It is probably the best value in a gun for the money. I know you want it in a .308, just stating my Vanguard in.270 Win shoots extremely accurate with any brand of ammo in 130gr as an example.

My wife shoots a vanguard s1 youth in 7mm-08 i highly recomend it and it came with 2 stocks so it could grow with your child! The wife is a midget so I'm fairly sure she will never grow into the adult stock haha. She can hit the pie plate at 500 from prone every shot.

Well after a ton of back and forth I settled on a Browning Micro Midas in 6.5 Creedmoor. All I have to say is WOW! By far the most accurate rifle I have ever shot. I put the first five shots down range (100 yards) let both my boys shoot a couple of rounds each and all we could almost cover all nine of them with a quarter! This is with factory ammo too (Honady ELD-x). To say I am impressed is an understatement. I think I am going to "steal" this one from my boys.....

I didn't know 6.5 Creedmoor was just a different name for 308!!!
Just hackin' on ya man.

I just got a 6.5 for my son's family to use (Thanks to another great friend) and I'm building one for a close friend who will have the chance to use it on a glam-animal is a few short months.

Congratulations on a great purchase and a super-shooter!
