I just bought this and added a Vortex HS-T 4-16?44 with Warne mounts.
Will this gun be effective for Deer at 600 to 1000 yards? Or do I need to think more of only up to 600 ? I have a Kimber .270 and I'm very accurate up to 400 with it.

I also shoot a 7MM RM. Effective to 1000 if you and your rifle are up to it and conditions allow. My research tells me to avoid Barnes bullets at that range. Mine does well with Berger Hunting VLD 168gr.

Thank you Sagebrush. The range is gated right now. When it's open I will post how it went. I'm going to sight it in zero at 300 yards.

I have the same gun, different scope. Tack driver.

I'd try the VLDs, I'm going to. I have great accuracy with 160 gr Accubonds, but they don't open up enough for me at long range.

Why not Barnes? Are they not mushrooming at all at that distance? I understand they need like 1800fps to expand right? What about the Berger as far as expansion?

A bullets velocity will dictate it's performance, regardless of it's design.
It isn't as hard as it once was to find a good bullet.
The trick is one that works equally well at 100 or 1000 yrds. and all in between.
Lots of good hunting bullets just pass through without opening up at 100 yrds. or less because of hardness. But that same bullet will open up perfectly at 700 without passing through.
The animal will die just the same in either case.
Accubond, partitions, ELD-X, and even the majority of the non bonded core bullets will work great under normal conditions and average distance's.
Those premium bullets for hunters shine brighter on those sketchy over 450yrd. shots.
Trusting your bullet will only come with time and game downed successfully.

But, all this means nothing without shot placement.

There's all sorts of "stuff" on the internet that some guys try to pass off as fact. This thread is no different
I'll leave it at that but a couple posts have me scratching my head.

Yea.

I've been gone for awhile.

My limited experience was they didn't expand at 603 yards. Leaving the barrel at 2950. 4" groups at 600.

Maybe I shouldn't have made that post with only one example.

I sure like the BT 165gr Nosler in a 30 cal speed is right at 3700.
