Hi MM members,

Looking for some advice from fellow hunters and shooting enthusiasts. I recently purchased a Browning Hells Canyon Speed (7mm Mag) for western big game hunting (primarily elk and mule deer). Does anyone have a similar set-up to recommend a bullet and grain weight they've found to work out well? I have a Leupold 3i 4.5-14x40mm CDS scope.

Appreciate any thoughts,

Our pet loads are like opinions. We all have them and share them freely but it might not be the best for you.

I've used a 7mm Mag off and on for years and years and almost any bullet works for deer and antelope just fine but when it comes to bears and elk, I use the 160 grain Nosler Partition (you can use this single bullet for everything too).

Right now the best powder we've found is IMR 7977 but it's new and a bit hard to find. Over the years the venerable IMR 4831 has been the go-to powder for us. Many others would work equally well too.

Nice rifle and scope combo! Learn how to use it effectively and you'll really have something.

I have the same gun, but in 6.5 CM. Really a neat little rifle, lightweight and shoots really well. Hard to go wrong with any hunting bullet of 160 grs or more in that 7mm. Accubonds, Eld-x, Berger, partitions, Barnes, they all make good shooting bullets capable of taking any Deer or Elk you'll run in to.

I'd try the new Reloder 26 if you can find it, it's slower than 22, but faster than 25 (yes I know that makes no sense, but its true) should produce top velocities in that caliber.

I bought an X-Bolt before Browning came out with the HCS. It likes the Berger 168gr Hunting VLD. Shoots better than I can aim.

If a guy could find some old H870 laying around that would be the ticket. That's the reason I dropped that caliber. I easily got 3170fps w/ 162 Hornady's and inch groups at 300 yards out of a 26 inch barrel...sorry for the flashback to the past.

I'll second the 168 gr Berger Hunting VLD pushed by H-1000. I custom load for all my friends and one shoots this load very well in a 26 inch barrel. We haven't used it on anything but paper yet so I won't know till fall on the other end of things.
