I'm about to start a new load for my old model 70 with the newer Hornady ELD-X 178gr. Bullets.
It's chambered in 300 win. mag. and I've modified the mag well box to get the space needed to seat long if needed.
Anyone have experience with this cartridge and bullet?
Planning on Alliant R-22 or R-25 with Winchester Magnum primers.
Was looking at start gr. of 74 or 75 and working my way up.

Any info from someone with a history with this combo would be great.
Thanks.

I have a Sako 85 in .300 Winchester Magnum. I shoot the 178 ELD-X exclusively in that rifle. I use WLRM primers and Nosler cases. I use 72 Grains of H4831SC with the bullets seated between .010 and .015 off the lands. At 100 yards, this load gives me 3 shot group with at least two touching.
At 300 yards, it shoots a 3 shot group of just around an inch. I have taken a couple of bucks with 1 shot using this load. Both shots were over 300 yards. Both shots were spine shots.

just sayin...mh

Thanks so much for taking the time to post that info MH.
You have great timing to, as I will be starting my load work up tomorrow.
Congrats on your sheep tag and from what I've seen on this forum, I'm sure you'll tag out on a good ram.
Hope you don't burn yourself out doing your scouting. Remember to take some easy time on the old injuries.
I drag a few battle wounds around myself. I'm not usually smart enough to take a break when I should.
Sometimes it's touph to not go look over the next ridge. But guess that's what separates the guys that are successful and the one's that wish they were.
Again thanks and hope life is full of horns and happiness for you this year.
If your still chasing Rams in October, I'd be happy to help hump a load off the mountain for ya if you need a hand.
Always willing to help a man if I can.

Didn't have any H4831 and only have a half a pound of IMR4831. Lots of Alliant Reloder 22 so started working up a few batches.
Started seeing pressure signs at 78.8 gr.,so I backed it off and settled in at 77gr. of R-22.
Only shot at the hundred, but less than 1/2 inch groups look good to me.

I'll shoot it through the chrony tommorow after lunch.

I used to worry a lot about velocity. I used all the Reloder powders and some other slow burning powders to obtain maximum velocity. When I attempted to reach maximum velocity, I always seemed to loose accuracy. Now, I just work up the most accurate load and chronograph it. If I know what the bullet is doing at the speed it leaves the barrel, I just adjust my point of aim and bingo. I am not one of the guys with the 1,000 yard weapon. As long as I know what my bullet is doing out to 400 yards, I am ready to go hunting. If I can't get closer than 400 yards, I need to work on my stalking skills.

just sayin...mh

LAST EDITED ON Jun-25-17 AT 10:45AM (MST)[p]True words there MH.
I have gotten best accuracy from the old IMR powders like 4831. I have lots of the Reloader powders now , because it was the only type I could get local a couple years ago.
Faster speeds usually are less accurate.
Though luckily, what I have is shooting well enough for me in this rifle.
The extra speed might help buck a little more wind, but bullet drop won't be much more advantageous till you reach out to 5 or 600 yrds. plus distances.
