What is everybody's experiences with effective poundage for elk? Going to buy a recurve and want to use it for elk hunting just don't want to go to light on the draw weight.
Thanks,
Trevor

For years the #1 P&Y elk was killed with a 46lb bow.
It's about a well placed shot hopefully double lung if possible. Shoot a heavy arrow...I shoot a 466gr. Arrow in my compound bow. Using FJM's and get total pass throughs at 40yds on a well placed lung shot.

You will be shooting wooden arrows much larger in diameter than my arrows. Couple guys I know shooting recurve shoot 550+++++gr. and with a slow arrow like what you will be shooting out of a recurve. I would consider not shooting longer range shots over 40yds with that setup. Just My Opinion.:)

I say that because with a slow arrow lots of bad things happen when shooting longer ranges. Wind drift, the game decides to take a step....as the arrow is released or in the air....all effecting shot placement and a wounded majestic animal. In my experience most bulls I have seen never stay still for more than a few seconds if that long in the country we hunt.

Good Luck

I shoot a #55 @ 28" recurve. Remember you are holding the whole draw weight with a traditional bow. If you are new to Traditional, I'd recommend you start with a lower draw weight and focus on form and developing good habits. IMHO #45 are a blast to shoot!
My arrows are about 650 grains with a 2 blade head.

I've got a 35# that I shoot and have just started to like the traditional mute than the tricked out compounds. I only shoot a 26" draw so I figured I would have to get a 55# so I'm still shooting at least 50# with my shorter draw. Thanks fire the information!

Depending on the make of the bow, you can get the draw weight in your draw length. Another thing to consider, the length of the bow will determine the stack the bow has. I've shot some shorter bows at #45 that feel like #60+
It's like compounds. Shoot as many as you can before you buy. Some of the high end bows (BlackWidow, Stalker Stick bows) have a program that lets you test one before you buy them.

I picked up a Bear Super Grizzly 55# at 28 inches. I'm a 27 inch. So far its been fun, but I don't intend to hunt with it in 2014. Got it because I want to take it elk hunting as well because we usually take point blank shots.

Put a heavy arrow through it with a cut on contact razor sharp 4 blade and you will be doing well.
