Resharpening Montecs

Whats the best way that all of you guys have found to resharpen your Montecs by G5? I haven't really shot them that much I think its just putting them in my quiver and pulling them out that has taken that edge off of them. Any ideas would be awesome thanks.

Muley that's why we shoot the G5 Strikers :) I'd love to shoot those Montecs but I can't sharpen them good enough to save my ash. I've seen some use a fine stone and get it right but I just seem to make them duller. So we went to the Strikers...one kill and it's a new set of blades on that head and we save the older blades for target broadheads.

Good luck hope you do better than me sharpening those awesome broadheads.

If you simply lay them flat on a hone with some oil they'll sharpen up perfect. I've also used a piece of wet/dry fine grit sandpaper on a glass surface. Add water and do circles with the broadhead until done.

People complain about the sharpness of Montecs, but I can say that I shot an elk at 27 yards and it hit a rib dead center on it's way out and still landed nearly 30 yards on the other side of the elk. I think they're awesome broadheads and they fly great to boot. This year though I'm going to try the slick tricks. Something about them intrigues me.

trophy hunter you aren't the only one! I have tried sharpening them and they end up being similar to a butter knife made 80 years ago... I like them but will be switching back to a replaceable blade system.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

I am in a similar boat. Want to touch up the Montec's before the season, but you guys are making me nervous.

all 3 blade heads.... 3 sided jewel stick moving from back to front. Coarse first 10 strokes per flat, then medium. Then with fine do one flat at a time rolling the head about 30 times. Use light pressure. If the steel is good they'll sharpen up just fine, if not, switch to vpa. I use a rubber band to test sharpness, it should snap it real easy.

They use thicker steel than most blades so they don't always feel as razor sharp even when the blade itself is.

Here is a link...

I shot a deer last year with a Montec CS and it smoked him, massive blood and he only went 15 yards. I'll be using one on an elk this year so wish me luck.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-13-14 AT 03:31PM (MST)[p]I say this half jokingly, but there's some truth to it. The best way to get Montecs sharp is to ditch them and buy some VPA's. Way easier to get sharp and much stronger too, at least in my experience. They are machined froms solid steel instead of molded like a Montec.

I smoked an elk last year with mine at 35 yards and it only went 25 yards dead.
I use the sharpening stone and it works for me just fine.
