A question for tree stand user. What height do you hang your stand when you hunt mule deer and elk. I've never used one and all the research I've done says 18 to 20 feet. Just looking for some information.

Thanks

I grew up in Pennsylvania hunting whitetails from tree stands. That was actually the only way we hunted.

It depends a lot on the terrain and habitat that you're hunting in. Game will see you in a tree if you stick out. If you're in timber or have a good back drop you can get away with 10-12 feet off of the ground. If you're tree is on a hillside and your game is coming along a trail uphill from you don't be afraid to go 30 (if the tree will hold you). I've been busted at 25+ feet. Higher is better as you will be further out of the sight plain of game. However, you must consider the shot angle. Shooting at angles is harder than shoot on flat ground and the higher you go the harder it gets. Remember when shooting from an elevated position to bend at the waist, keeping your shoulders level.

I agree that 18-20 feet is a good average, but just consider your outline and make sure that you had sufficient cover behind you.

Good Luck!
