Question of the Day ... Scent Control

Is it important? What are you guys using to help keep your prey from smelling your stinking butt? Scent-Lok gear, does it really work? Is it worth the $$$?

Last year, some of my hunting was done within a mile of the road, so what I did was had a garbage bag filled with sage brush in-which I stored my clothes. I'd put them on at the trailhead, and remove them before getting into my car. They definitely smelled like sagebrush. Not sure if it was worth it or not.

On backpack trips, covering my odor is much harder. I arrive to my camp spot sweating. I typically clean myself with baby wipes and also rub sage and/or pine all over my clothes, but not so sure that's doing the job.

I personally don't use any special scent controlling type clothing. Maybe I should be??????

After 45 years of bowhunting I'm still skeptical of the scent elimination clothes and sprays. I've used some sprays but I still suspect it's just to make me feel like I'm doing something.
It's easy to keep everything "clean" for a couple days but unless you're sitting a tree stand and camping in your house, I don't know what to do after a few days of hunting.
I think animals can smell your breath just as fast as smelling your butt! Busted!

Up wind = detected
down wind = undetected
That's the only surefire method that I've ever found.

Just mt 2 scents (pun intended)

Scent Control Works .....But you have to do it right or your wasting your time and money. Some guys say Scent -Lok gear doesn't work and it also is a waste of money. Well I can tell you from first hand experience over the last 10yrs using Personal hygiene de-scenting wash products, washing Scent-Lok cloths in scent free products then bagging the cloths, boots after spraying with Scent-Killer Spray has changed the way we hunt. Our Group uses Hunter Specialities Products and Scent-Killer Spray. We find those more organic products do not last as long in the field. Usually we can get 4 solid days out of one set of cloths so on backpack hunts we pack in one extra set, some Scent-Killer Spray and field bath de-scenting wash cloths. Usually takes 3 cloths per bath per person. Usually bath every 3 days on early season hunts to stay pretty scent free, no campfires. Instant coffee no perked coffee odors.:)

To get Scent Control right you have to be diligent about how you do the Scent Control, how you handle your cloths and gear so you don't re-contaminate your cloths or gear. We always bag our cloths, boots and backpacks when we get back to camp if we are on that type of hunt. Never allowing food odors, coffee odors or any odors to come in contact with what we take out in the field. If we are on a backpack hunt we take along field bath wash cloths purchased from Cabela's. To de-scent wash up etc. we use the same cloths to wipe down our bows, arrows and the Scent-Killer spray on boots, as well as backpacks. Bottom line De-Scent everything...that takes care of the gear. Now you must watch what you take into the field for snacks, food etc. or your breath odors will give you away. Guys take stuff like salami, cheeses, sandwiches then get busted and complain the de-scenting products don't work. They work as advertised but we the hunters contaminate gear or provide additional odors that can get one busted.

We walk in and out of elk country around bulls and cows in their breeding areas for 10 days and never blow them out or get busted from odors. If we get busted it is from movement. But even getting busted we don't totally blow them out maybe they move a couple hundred yards but never out of the area. We can slalk from up wind or down wind on both elk and deer without getting busted from odors. You have to be diligent about your Scent Centrol or your wasting your time and good money. We have had elk to 1yrd and in one case I actually had to move to keep a cow from stepping on me. Being that close to game when can watch the snott running out their nostrils runs chills through our bodies and the rush is incredible if you never have experienced it. Scent-Lok gear, De-Scenting Products changed our hunting experience and the way we hunt forever. :) :):)

Im hearing a lot of great reviews on the Nose Jammer products. It comes in a kit with body wash, detergent, spray and deodorant and is made from concentrated natural organic compounds. Way cheaper than scent lock clothing. I'm going to try this stuff out but mostly for tree stand hunting.

You can keep your clothes and body clean to the max but I don't care what you do you cannot keep your breath clean enough that an animal cant smell it if your directly upwind of them. Keep your nose in the wind at all times and you wont have any problem with them smelling you.

I don't buy into it.

I suppose with careful and consitent managment, you may reduce sent, but there is no way you'll elimnate it.

I hunt a lot like Founder. High physical exhiration = sweat = sent. No way around it.

Wind in your face, that's my philosophy.
