weight inserts for Gold Tip arrows

So I was just looking at the Gold Tip website about the weights that you can insert. It looks like you just buy the weights and the wrench then adjust the weights as needed. Has anyone messed with these before? Do they interchange easily? Can you really improve your penetration, KE, and accuracy with this system?

if you start increasing the weight on the point end of the shaft, you weaken the spine of the arrow. Generally, if you exceed 25grs up front, you are going to have to shorten the arrow to compensate.

If you add weight to the rear, you stiffen the spine. Now you must use a longer arrow.

I have never used the gt weight system. I find it a heck of a lot easier just to shoot heavier heads. Lot of goods heads out there these days that go from 125 to 200 grs, I currently shoot 175's.

Ah, thank you very much for the info. It never even crossed my mind that I would be effecting the spine of the arrow by doing this. It actually sounds like a good way to borrow a ton more trouble with arrow tuning. My arrows are currently at about 395 grains. I have never tried 125 grain points and broad heads, I may try that. I am also wondering if I should consider going with a heavier arrow. I know the Gold Tip Hunter XTs are good arrows, but I am also curious about getting into something that is more the area of 10 GPI like the Gold Tip Kinetics, or Victory (VAP). Either way I am not going to change anything up until after September hunting, I am gonna spend from now till then figuring out which way to go. Thanks a ton for the info!

I like a heavier arrow myself and currently shoot 450grs. If you take a 125gr fieldpoint and shoot it bare shaft at say 30yds to start with, if it flies straight and hits the spot, the spine is pretty much dead on. You can keep backing up for fine tuning. But if the nock end of that arrow swings left, the shaft is to weak. If it swings right, it is to stiff - this is for a right hand shooter, reverse if left handed.

I just started building my own arrows and wanted to get my FOC up a bit so I bought the weights and wrench. I have a bunch of 100 grain broadheads and didn't want to spend the money on a bunch of 125 grain heads, the weights are a lot cheaper. I haven't been able to shoot them yet but as far as putting them in and taking out they're are very easy to do. I was borderline on the spine of my arrow so I cut them an inch shorter, hopefully the combination will work, if not I'm out 15 bucks not 40 for heavier broadheads.

Given proper arrow spine (which trumps nearly all else) I really like GT's weights. Very easy to use.

LAST EDITED ON Apr-08-15 AT 07:10PM (MST)[p]I use 50 grains of weight behind a 100 grain head with the GT Velocity arrow. I played with the weight inserts till I had a good dynamic spine. I then adjusted with my draw weight to get it near perfect.
Don't be afraid of them. The weights are easy to use and a great way to get the perfect arrow for any setup. You can increase FOC and obtain a heavier arrow easily this way. If you are looking to gain just a little weight up front, a 125gr head might be an easier ticket though.

Another option if your going to go up 50grs is to use a 50gr brass insert. Lot tougher than the aluminum.

Thanks for the info guys! I think the heavy inserts sounds like a good idea, my only issue is that is a very tough thing to undo if I don't like it. Thanks again
