I have a hoyt charger that is about a year and a half years old. I do shoot a lot, usually 1 to 2 times a week. I burned through the factory bus and control cables in about 9 months. I then got a custom string set and went through that in about 5 months. I initially used the green string wax. I don't recall the brand name. I now use String Snot. I got a new string set on there now. Nobody could visibly see if there was anything wrong with the cable slide but that has been change out too. Id say am very religious about waxing my string set regularly. I am gonna be more mindful of making sure it is not moist when I go shoot in order to keep the dust off of it. What routine do you guys do to maintain your strings and cables?

LAST EDITED ON Jul-06-15 AT 02:41PM (MST)[p]That is strange the cable slide is such and issue. I think Hoyts have one of the best slides out there. Hopefully the new one fixes it. I don't care for mine as well as I should. Even before I started building strings I planned on replacing mine every year just because of the abuse I gave them in the hills. I really don't think the cables need to be waxed that often though. They don't loose the wax like the string does. I would wax your string when it is looking dry or starting to fuzz a little but cables really don't need it but once a month.

We have 5 bows in our family. We changed to "Winners Choice" strings and cables and never looked back...we shoot plenty....same strings on the bows for 3 years and counting...just keep'm waxed?

If there wasn't a problem with your slide id say your waxing incorrectly way to often. I rarely wax my cable and only wax my string if it starts getting the fuzzy look. The strings I make can often last a couple of years of shooting multiple leagues. My hunting strings can last a couple of years if they don't get caught on some brush. I have carp bows that are exposed to all sorts of grime that last multiple seasons and Im not so sure I've even waxed those strings.

Are you using a hair dryer?
Are you using something to burnish your string?
The reason I ask is some people will apply their wax and burnish it in trying to make their string nice and round. The problem is the friction creates heat which can actually fray or melt the tiny fibers in the string. The vigorous burnishing can also cause micro pieces of sand or dirt to scratch or fray the string.

The only thing you need to do is get a soft string wax and apply with your fingers lightly. Then take some dental floss and wrap it around your string once and lightly drag it down the string and remove the dirty looking wax. Dont go over board lightly is the key.

You also don't need expensive wax. Ive tried all sorts of stuff on my bow strings including Vaseline and Obenauf's Heavy-Duty Leather Preservative I use for my boots. I got it at cabellas and the Stuff seems to work just fine in a pinch.
The best stuff ive found is some a product I got in Vegas at the Brownells booth. For the life of me I cant remember what the heck its called. Its a cleaner, wax in a cotton cloth. lightly rub it on the string and it takes the dirt off and waxes your string all in one motion.

Thanks a ton for the feed back guys!

Like mentioned earlier just use wax and then take some dental floss to pull the old dirty wax off. I just use the cheap wax that looks like a big tube of chapstick. My strings will last a couple seasons and I shoot a lot. When I was stationed in GA and shot a lot of 3d tournaments its all i used then to. Don't wax the servings though just your string.
