Draw Weight vs Shot Distance

LAST EDITED ON Sep-02-15 AT 06:13PM (MST)[p]Hey guys and gals. It is my son's second year doing archery mule deer. I'll preface this by saying I don't bow hunt. Maybe next year, but I just can't seem to put down the rifle. But that is another discussion, I know. My question is, is there a draw weight to ethical shot distance theory? Accuracy isn't a problem. He has gotten a lot better over the last year thanks to some help from some of you guys. He shoots consistent groups at 30 and 40 yards, so his shot distance when hunting will be limited to 40 (last year I held him at 20). He is drawing 45 lbs and shooting a Diamond Infinite Edge. 100 Grain Montec G5 broadheads for hunting. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

With that set up there isn't a deer out there he couldn't knock down as long as he hits the right spot at 40 yards. Granted I shoot 75lbs, but I consistently blow through elk. On my 2013 bull I shot through one shoulder a couple of ribs on the far side and the arrow kept going another 30 yards. I used a Montec on that bull.

Rabid...Thanks for the response. That is sort of what I was thinking, just needed some reassurance from someone with experience. A few more weeks and we'll be out in the woods! I can't wait.
