Looking to get started in Archery. Hoping to get some advice on a good bow for someone just starting out. I am a lefty so can anyone recommend a good bow at a reasonably affordable price.

I saw some packages from PSE and Fred Baer at Bass Pro Shops. Is it better to buy something like that or buy a bow and add quality accessories. Like sight pin, stabilizer's and so on as you can afford them? I am just getting into this so any advice would be great. I live in So. Cal so light for long hikes, and durable are important to me.

I wouldn't be against those packages just make sure they get your draw length correct or find a few bow shops ,they usually have package deals.

Best to find a quality archery shop in your area....you will get better overall experience than with big box stores ...get measured and dont over pound your draw weight....lots of good bows out there today...shoot several and choose what feels good for you....pick a bow that has adjustable draw lenght as well as draw weight, add a peep sight,we use medium size, a five pin sight,we use BlackGold great fiber optics in low light conditions, choose a quality modern arrow, we use Easton Full Metal Jacket 340 with 2" Blazer vanes and G-5 Striker Broadheads dial the pins in 20,30,40,50,60 good to go......choose a broadhead that shoots same as field points ....makes life much easier.....than readjusting everything when want to go hunting.....

You can save money with a package deal....but as you grow into achery you will find you will want better quality components for your setup. If you can afford the gear buy the bow only and build it with quality components you will save money in the long run buy not having unwanted sight etc just up in your closet...

Good Luck,

If you are looking to get into Archery Hunting, I would maybe recommend a used bow. For a lefty, that may be a difficult task. But you can get a good feel for what it's like before you blow a couple paychecks on the higher end stuff.

I'd go into a store and see what bows feel good to you.

I have a Bass Pro nearby and I spent an hour there trying different bows before going home to do some more research. Out of what I shot the Bear Domain felt the best to me and I was getting pretty consistent groups (for a first time shooter).

Few weeks later I found a brand new one on sale with all the package bells and whistles for $350 shipped online.

It's not the fanciest bow and it's not carbon but I shoot it well so it works for me. One day if I start spending more time archery hunting and have some more disposable income I'll consider upgrading but the most important thing in my opinion is that the bow shoots well for you.

Thank you all for the advice. I am going to head to a couple archery shops I found, and shoot some different bows to see what suits me.

i got into archery a few years ago and picked up a ready to hunt package PSE stinger 3g. Its nothing fancy but got me started. I later upgraded my sight and had to replaced the strings after 2 seasons. Now that i have had it for a few years i want an upgrade but that will have to wait until next season. I also live in california and have taken it on multiple backpack hunts, often times strapped to my pack while going through thick areas and banged it against rocks and trees. its held up pretty good in my opinion. If you have the money i would buy a bare bow and and build it. If youre on a budget the packages will get you started.
