string replacement

Ok so I bought a used bow about 5 years ago, since then i have only put maybe 1000 arrows through it. Ive never replaced the string, do I need to replace the string this year before I hunt with it? Im not an archery guru or pro or anything obviously. Is the time between string replacements based on time passed or by number of shots through it. I havent noticed my peep rotating but there are some fuzzy spots on the string. I have always stored it with wax on the string and whenever I shoot it I rewax the string. Any advice would be great. Im down to 5 arrows and I can only afford to buy new arrows this year or replace the string. Thanks in advance.

It's a tough decision when to replace the string, but if the previous owner didn't replace it and it's been 5 yrs I think it's time for a new one. Bow string wax helps a lot especially when out in the elements a bit. Personally I would do the string with the thought being that your bow will not function without a string, and you can easily hunt with a couple arrows.

If its not broken don't fix it....if the condition of the string looks like it will not break you can get by a while longer with that string....just keep it waxed....Personally I would purchase the arrows....then down the road replace the string....usually if you see a lot of fraying or cuts of the string then time to replace but those strings have many layers....my string is 6 years old I havent shot as much as when I was younger. I dont think there is a set time like how many shots to replace a string...my original Mathews String only lasted three years...then the serving started to fray...replaced with Winners Choice string and cable...still going....6 years now....not close to needing to replace string any time soon.....good luck just remember when you do change the string you will need to resight in a bit...

If you go to an archery shop and not the big box stores you can purchase 6 half dozen arrows instead of a dozen....just a thought...

Sorry but if the string and cables have not been replaced in 5 years then I would have them replaced.

First of all thanks for the replies. I went with a half dozen of the same arrows I still have. I went shooting and at 40 Im still shooting a 2 inch group at 40 yards. I only have 2 weekends this year to hunt archery and Im feeling confident that my string is fine. Im not a long ranger so if something is outside 50 yards I get closer or dont shoot. Thanks for all opinions and advice. In the spring a new string will be put on or a new to me bow will be purchased. Thanks again.

Depending on your budget.....if you can look at the new carbon composite bows out there this year 2016.....so light and
shoots
so smooth without stabilizer...OMG....Purchased the 2016 PSE Carbon Air.....BlackGold 5pin brightest fiberoptics for low light conditions on the market IMO...

You made the right decision. This buys you time and let's you later decide if you want to invest in your equipment in the future. It's amazing how waiting another year can change your decisions on what you think you want.
