Is my whitetail setup adequate for elk?

My whitetail setup is 58 lbs, shooting a 100 grain Muzzy 3-blade, Carbon Impact arrow. Total arrow weight is 387 grains. Shot at 250 fps, that results in a KE of 54 ft-pounds. Is this adequate for elk? What do others shoot for arrow weight and speed?

I've experimented with different weight broadheads (75, 100, 125) and the KE remains about the same for all.

More than adequate. Practice longer distances, shoot shoot and shoot some more so when the moment of truth comes you're confident. Big animal, shot placement with your setup will be key. Good luck

Dang...I was hoping I needed a new bow!! :D :D

Seriously, I thought the 387 grains would be a bit light. On the practice, yep. Practice, practice, practice

Those arrows are to light imo.

Idaho used to require a minimum weight of 400 grains for any big game animal but I just checked and it looks like 300 is now the minimum. I'm not sure what state you plan on hunting but you might want to check to see if there is a minimum arrow weight.

If you're looking for justification for a new bow, then I retract my previous post.

You need 459 grains at 300 fps minimum!!

With my short draw length, it takes some effort to build a 400+ grain arrow with most of what is commonly available and frequently used. However, I have now problem maxing out the poundage on the current 70 pound bows, but again speed takes a drastic hit with my shorter draw length.
