New Bow

Hi guys new the forum not new to hunting. I really haven't bow hunted the last 8 years or so due to limited time off I might go out 2 times a year just to get out and do a little pre rifle scouting but haven't gotten serious. Well now that I have more time off and have seniority to take my time off I really want to get back into archery hunting again as I loved it when I was younger plus extends your season..

Anyway the bow I have is around 10 years old and was a lower end bow when I bought it but that's what I could afford at the time and it served its purpose..

So now I'm looking into getting a new bow and wanted some of your guys opinion as I haven't followed what's been going on with bow companies the last 10 years or so. Is there anything to look out for have certain companies that used to be good gone down hill or gotten cheap in quality?

Thanks ahead of time for replies guys

Go to an archery shop and pick a few you like. Then close your eyes and have someone hand you one. Keep your eyes closed and shoot it. Keeping your eyes closed avoids the bias of the brand.

I haven't really kept up with the latest features.

If you scan the archery forum, there are several posts about buying bows.

Bowtech for sure and I've been told Elite, customer service is crap. If something goes wrong and you need some parts you will be waiting for months. I'll never buy another Bowtech again.

Thanks guys,

I was planning to go shoot a few and I am unbiased as far as brand goes especially since I haven't been around archery hunting lately.

3blade for bowtech was it mainly the customer service that was bad or were there other issues with your bow?

Google "Bowtech limb issues" - make sure you have a few hours to read horror stories & watch videos of unhappy owners.

No bias here, we bought my wife a Bowtech & it shoots awesome. Just too many limb issues & they took way too long to address the problems.

I had a lower limb delaminate last August. I happened to have another set laying around so we put those in but it turned out the limb pocket retainers were bad. I waited 8 weeks to get those. Put the bow back together and the flex guard broke, its been about 3 months waiting for that part. My dealer calls them every now and then but it doesn't seem to help. He says Bowtech and Elite have lousy customer service, they both have been sold to many times.

I would probably avoid Obsession as well, sent them an email months ago thru their website form and never have gotten a reply.

I shoot Xpeditions now.

Thanks guys this is the kind of info I'm looking for. I'd really like to buy a Mathews but I just don't know if I can bring myself to spending over a $1000 on a bow. Lol.

Thanks for the link I'll have to keep an eye out, there are some really nice used bows for sale for good prices been looking through and there's a lot of options

I chipped a lower limb on my Bowtech hitting a rock. It still shot fine. I went into the shop and showed them. Bowtech had me new limbs for free in less than a week.

I'll suggest your shop has an issue going on with Bowtech.

I will also concur that the Archery talk classifieds is the best place to find hardly used bows.

Like the first post said, go shoot them blind and see which one you like best.

After you shoot them all you'll probably find that the Matthews Triax might just be worth the $1000 easily.

I'm still shooting my Bowtech, but if I were to be buying a new one, I'd definitely go give one of those a try.

Haven't tried the xpeditions or obsessions, so I can't compare there.

Cheers, Pete

That's why I'm a little scared to go shoot a Mathews I'm afraid if I shoot one I'm going to have to buy it lol anyway my local archery shop has some funky hours but hoping to make it down to do some looking and shooting next week

Or maybe since the bow isn't under warranty Bowtech simply doesn't give a rip. Either way, its unacceptable.

As others have said, get to a bow shop and shoot as many bows as you can to determine what you want. There are a lot of variables that different shooters want in a bow such as speed, brace height, weight, axle to axle length, draw cycle, etc. All of the above vary from bow to bow and what I like in a bow might not be what you like.

Another good tool I've used is this website:

http://compoundbowchoice.com/reviews/

They have reviews of just about any bow ever made over the last 10+ years.

Lastly, I am going to recommend Mathews. They are known for being very smooth to shoot and very easy to shoot. I also would not buy new. I bought 3 used Mathews off Ebay ( Heli-M, Creed, Creed XS) and got 3 bows for what you would pay for a new one. They are older bows, probably 5-6 years old but are phenomenal shooters. There are some guys out their still shooting the Switchback because it is arguably one of the best bows Mathews ever made and it came out around 2007 I think.

Just because it's "new" doesn't mean it's better.

2005 - I'm one of those guys. I have a ChillX but my switchy gets the same amount of shooting time. I can't bring myself to sell it.

Mine was 5 year old this summer when Bowtech sent new limbs, no questions asked. I even told the shop guy I hit it one a rock. I don't know 3blade, just seems very different than what I've heard with them and my first hand experience.

Cheers, Pete

Well guys not sure if I made a good decision or bad but I went down to my local archery shop he didn't have a lot of bows I could shoot (just a small shop) but I was able to put my hands on a Mathews and now I'm hooked. All I can say is wow. I've never shot anything like it it is so smooth and vibration free. I think I made my decision on what I want so now my only decision is do I buy used or new?? I'm looking it as illspend the money once get what I really like and be happy for years

Thanks for everyone that gave suggestions I'll let you guys know if I decide new or used and will post up some pics when I get my bow

Every year or two over the last, 12 years or so I'd go into my local bow shop and shoot the the newest Mathews just for kicks. And EVERY YEAR I say, there is no way they can make them any smoother than the last one. And every year I was wrong. They are unbelievably smooth shooting bows.

If your the kind of person that will buy a new bow and shoot it for 10 years, I would say go new.

But, if your like me now and you like to tinker and experiment with different sights, bows and rests, I would buy used.

You could likely shoot any of their hunting bows from the last 8 years and be impressed. Good luck, you won't be dissapointed whatever your choice!

It is amazing how they can keep making them better every year I had this convo with the owner of the archery shop and he basically said the same thing..

Well the more I think about it the more I'm leaning towards new this is something I will buy and be happy with for 10 years I won't be trading in every few years so I might as well spend a little extra and get exactly what I want.

I ended up ordering a Mathews this year. Still waiting on it to show up. This year though for me it was hands down my favorite bow. Last year I had a Realm X and the year before that a CD34 and a couple others. This year though I just couldn't believe how comfortable the Vertix was to shoot. Time will tell if this bow becomes my all time favorite but im sure if not it will be up there for sure.

When did u order and how long is the delivery time?

I just picked up a Halon 32 all black. Couldn't pass it up for the price! I'm sure you won't be disappointed with your Mathews!

Hmmm. Looks like you're biasing by the brand! Shoot it and compare it to others with your eyes closed. If it's really that much better, you'll be able to tell the difference.

Not saying Mathews doesn't make good bows, or that it won't be smoother and quieter. Let the shooting tell you, not the label!

Good luck and post pics of your new deer slaying machine!

I just went with a Stone colored bow. Luckily the shop had one on order already and put my name on it. They said it should be here in the next week or 2. I paid for it on the 1st I believe. Everything I have heard is that if your doing 100% custom everything its taking 6-8 weeks. I would defiantly call shops around you and see what they have and what's on order already.

I bought a Tiax this year. Love the bow! I shot all the the brands my local bow shop had. Pse, bowtech, Hoyt, and Mathews. Quickly narrowed it down to Mathews triax vs Hoyt wrx. Mathews shot better hands down but was noticeably heavier. I do a lot of spot and stalk style hunting so was unsure about the weight because the difference in the bows shooting was minimal. Well wound up with the Mathews but it is heavy to me. I killed a mule deer buck this year with it and stalk took 2:30 hours and my arm was killing me but I'm sure it would have with the Hoyt as well.

As far as new or used I would go new. In the long run it's worth it. If your not going to hurt your family by spending that amount of money then I would do it. I have had 4 bows in 30 years of bow hunting always bought new and the best I could afford. Looking back I've spent about $100.00 a year on bows. It's been worth every penny. I can't even take my family out to eat and to the movies for that.
Just my 2 cents.

Well guys thanks for everyone who chimed in, I ended up going all in on a new Mathews Vertix, this bow will
Last me a very long time. Now
It's going to be 6-8 weeks before it shows up. I ended up going with the 75lb draw and 80% let off. This bow did offer the 85% let off but I know there's a couple states that draw the limit at 80% which I still don't understand but anyway figure better off being safe than getting a
Ticket over something stupid if I ever do hunt those states. oh and I went with the subalpine camo scheme. Which I haven't seen very many of but I like the look of

Nice, let us know how it shoots when you finish getting it tuned up !!!

Cheers, Pete

LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-19 AT 11:47PM (MST)[p]Definitely keep us posted on your new bow, and congrats! I have the Mathews Triax (purchased last year) and I'm very happy with it.

I was concerned about the short ATA (as far as stability and accuracy), however that concern is unfounded. It is steady in the hand, accurate and I feel no vibration after the shot. The draw cycle is a little stiff, but this shorty has to make its power somewhere. :)
