I'm going on a moose hunt this fall South of Fairbanks and was wondering if anyone has hunted moose in this area and if so what size to expect? I'm hoping to hold ot for one in the 215+ inch range? It is on the slopes of the Alaskan Range and will be the second hunt starting Sept. 10 to the 20th. Thanks for any information!

I saw a monster while hiking out with my sheep last fall on the north slope of the AK range. Looked to be about 65" with 4 brows on one side and 5 on the other. He was probably safe where I saw him though. Shot a 51" up there about 15 years ago and my father took a 62" on that trip. Good luck, I'd say have fun, but that will end once you knock one down....

Thanks for the information, I'm pretty excited for it and know the packing out will be tough. I hope I can hold out long enough to find one of those Big Boys! I got back from a sheep hunt last year in the Talkeetna & Chugach Range, it was pretty tough to say the least.

I run a self guided fair chase moose camp in that area, be more specific on where you are going and with who and I will try and help answer any questions you my have. But first, 215, your looking at a 60" bull, there is an antler restriction for non-residents of 50" or larger or at least 4 brow tines on one side, so put in your mind know that any legal bull is your trophy and a successful hunt. alaskabulldown

I'm going with Ernie Finch,I have been talking with him for quite sometime and know a few people who have went with him over the last couple of years. I believe I'm in good hands with him! I know that 215 is large, but your correct, any bull is a trophy! I'm not exactly sure where his camps are, just somewhere South of Faribanks along the Alasakan slopes.

What is that hunt going to cost you ? I want to try it in a few years ? What do they offer for succes rates?

Wyo_Bulls-

How was Ernie Fitch? Is he doing and sheep hunts lately? Did you guys like him for moose and were you guided?

Alright, here is my moose from 2006. Ernie is a great outfitter and this was probably the best hunt I have ever went on and I am heading back with him next year to chase a bigger one! You will see bunches of moose and all kinds of other wildlife.

I met Ernie on a gravel bar on a river 3 days before the sheep opener with his 2 clients. Nice guy. We made sure we were going up different drainages. I came out with a nice ram, and I found out both his clients, a father/son team from Bozeman got their rams.

Thanks Falcon, what year? I heard he quite (I think from him!)

Where all of you guys happy with Ernie, I have been following him for some time.

Who did you hunt sheep with in the Chugach/Talakenees? I am booked with Braun for 2011, not sure what new draw is going to do?

Extremely happy with Ernie and I am going back with him again in 2008. I went with Dan Montgomery on my sheep hunts in the Chugach & Talkeetna's. I beleive that Braun actually guided for Dan a few years back??? I would imagine that the draw will make it a little tougher in getting tags, but the rams should now have some pressure took off of them, I guess time will only tell.

To those interested in a great AK moose experience....

I hope this image from photobucket comes through....this is my 1st attempt in posting pics....this bull is 62" and was harvested on 9/23 south of fairbanks with Ernie Finch....best hunt of my life

Less than 10k 1-on-1...which is a bargain compared to the yukon and BC moose hunts that have fewer animals and are 12k+ after all the trophy fees and such are paid...also, getting to Fairbanks is a whole lot easier (and more reliable) than getting into Canada (and all the airfees assoc with the north country of Canada!!)....Ernie's operation is absolutely top notch....your research will prove that....and a 58"+ bull is absoltuely do-able....60"+ is a chip shot for those who can pass up lesser bulls and work hard.
Good luck-

Ernies ph # is 907 339 2044.

I believe his web site is alaska antlers.com

I ran into him in 07. He and his 2 clients were on the same gravel bar getting ready to hike into the sheep country in The Wood River area.

Nice guy. Both the father and son got pretty nice rams.
