Im heading up to the kenai in June for guided steelhead, kings, pinks, chums, coho's, and halibut. We are also going on an unguided 5 day canoe/ camping trip for pike, grayling, and various salmon species. We are going to fly from Seattle to Anchorage. Then spend a few days on the kenai. Then we will head over to the kasilof and small creeks for the canoe portage. This should be alot of fun! I brought this up becaus of the new forum. And I have to buy my fishing liscence and tags this week, and send in deposits for the guides.

What do yalls think?

I have never been to alaska, and me and some buddies decided to do this for our junior summer. We are going to spend a total of 18 days fishing and camping in alaska.

take a lot of "OFF" with ya. you can buy your licenses at any sporting goods store or walmart in anchorage. git yourself a tatoo out on the "Spit", in homer. and take ice chests instead of suit cases. fill em with clothes and canned food and stuff. buy some water proof duffles when you get there for your clothes. then you have ice chests to bring fish back with. a couple good halibut will fill a big ice chest. good luck. get some rain gear too. have a blast and let us know how you do.

You ought to pound the silvers and reds! You will stack up the halibut meat too.
The Kenai Kings are a different story though, My friends that live there put in quite a bit of time on those guys. You are only allowed to keep two fish a year there! It is a trophy fishery,You may not catch many, but you could catch a MONSTER! Lots of them in the 50lb class are caught there every year, and some believe that the strain of giants(70+) are in trouble and are urging catch & release on the big guys.
Bring Lots of film.

Ive got it all figured out now.

We are going to get into anchorage around 9:00 pm. We will then rent a van, and drive 150 miles to soldotna, ans stay at a local church (this is me and a few friends from a bible study that I am in. They guy that is heading it all up is like our mentor. Anyhow, he knows someone who is friends with a guide in soldotna, who is also a preacher.) We we'll stay at the church, and then head out on the canoe trip for 3 days. When we get back, well head out for the king fishing.

HunterHarry,
What should i bring equipment wise. Im thinking I should bring 2 of my steelhead rods (should i bring more), and a small spinning rod, and a flyrod. But what should I bring lure wise. Just tons of corkies and yarn of all colors, with slinkies? Or should I go more for bobber fishing? Should I only bring drift fishing stuff, or should I bring lures too. I am going to have about $150 to restock my fishing stuff. What do you think I should buy?

Thanks,
Jordan

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Two preachers and a bunch of 17 yr old boys floating the Kasiloff in canoes. I'll bet you can't hear anyone scream for miles on that trip.

I'd bag the lures and spent your $150 on a good chasity belt and some ear muffs.

I'd bring a bunch of drift gear, some light leader line(8-10lb) for lining reds, puff balls or lil' corkies, for rainbows and dollies.
As for hardware I'd bring some pixie spoons with pink or green centers, some #5 blue fox and Mepps spinners for salmon and some real small ones too, if you are in Grayling water.
For fishing big river water on the Kenai it gets pretty specialized when they are side drifting roe or running Quick fish.
Have Fun!

Going back to rod selection, you will do OK with a good steelhead rod unless you are targeting giant Kenai Kings.
I use a G.Loomis IMX 9ft baitcasting rod rated for 8-12lb line,I am real confident with it for salmon up to 50lbs when using Maxima 10-12lb ultra green line. Just run that drag light and work em'!

My friend that has a cabin on the Kenai uses lots of vibrax spiners. They have treated me pretty good up there.

Thats some funny sh#t cb!!! Just what I was thinking. I'm sure we know which rod the preacher will be using.
