I know this isnt about AK but thought you guys would have some good knowledge on the subject.

My Father is going on a Moose hunt in Oct. up in B.C. and wants to take his A-bolt 270 with Fed. 150g.I have a Win.Mod 70 in 300wsm that I wont be needding that time of year.Him and I have been talking smack back and forth about this subject. He says shot placement I say use enough gun? But neather of us has been on a Moose hunt so I was hopeing some one could help us out.He11 I think both are good arguments. What do you guys think?

any input would help

I think a well placed shot from a 270 will kill a moose.

However, a 300wsm with a 200 grain Nosler Partition would be a much better choice.

both are good argument's, 270 is one of my favorite rounds, win, and the mag's, and if i was carrying one and had a chance at a moose, there would be a dead moose. that said i would not head up north carrying one! not that they won't do it, but because i have many rifles better suited. i know i am contradicting myself but why risk it on an expensive hunt? for what its worth a book i have by Chris Batin, i think? says the most popular guns owned by alaskens is #1- 30-06 #2 270. this is an old book and things may have changed by now.

A good friend of mine lived, worked and hunted in Alaska for 20 years and almost all of the Moose he has taken were with a .35 Whelen but has taken a few with a .280 Remington shooting handloads.
He hunted every year with his 280 and 35 nothing else.

In 03 I did a DIY moose-caribou hunt in AK. I used a 338 Win mag. The bull I killed was a 65" very large bull.He took three rounds from my 338, went down, then tryed to get back up.I grabed my buddies 375 and shot him again. He stayed down but still needed a coup degraue. My buddy shot his moose twice with his 375,both thru the lungs and the bull still managed to get to the river and died there. It took us three hours with a comealong and rope to get him out.(not fun)
I would leave the 270 at home and take the bigger cal. Also you need to think about the possibility
of trouble with bears. Some guys that I met on the river had to shoot a grizzly that charged them when they found it in there camp. They had to shoot it three times with 375s to put it down.
Just some things to consider.
