SE Alaska Goat Hunting

I am interested in doing a goat hunt in SE Alaska fall of 07.
My son-in-law is an AK resident so we may try to go unguided
but I am still keeping all my options open. Any experiences, suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

I guide and hunt out of Ketchikan.

As you know with your son being a resident you do not need a guide. He must be on the hunt with you.

The main thing about SE is the weather. You must schedule yourself enough days and then expect weather delays.

You must plan on what you will do with the meat and cape if one of you take a Goat and then you want to continue to hunt for the second Goat. It is Brown Bear and Wolverine country and you must be very cautious. The cape will have to be fleshed, ears, lips worked and salted fairly fast. Meat must be kept dry and won't last much more than 3 days, in the field. Big Billies can weigh 300+ lbs on the hoof and cape and meat is an overload for 2 packs.

Early season (aug) Goats have shorter hair but you will have better weather and longer days and bugs. Later hunts (sept) have less bugs but shorther days and more weather. Late hunts (oct) are guaranteed to have weather but the Goat hair will be nicer yet.

A satellite phone for communication with your air charter company is a must.

Physical conditioning is a must. I would be starting a very serious conditioning schedule now. It will be the hardest (physical) hunt you will ever go on.

Thanks for the info. What type of guiding do you do?

I have hunted all my life, been to Alaska alot, hunted caribou and such. But this trip would be a first for goats.
