I have made a decision to do a hunt in 2008 in Alaska. Jsut starting the planning now.

Probably Moose, maybe a combo. I have not hunted there yet.

Any recommendations> I am not sure whether it would be smarter to go with a guide the first time----for bear safety reasons and such.

Also, not sure how many trips I will be able to do in the future and would like to get a good solid moose, maybe around 60 incher if possible.

What to expect???

Fire away.

Thanks, Mark

depending on your age and physical condition is a greater determiter if you will need a guide rather than bear issues

I am 36, not afraid of much and am used to packing out elk from colorado avalanche chutes over 10000 ft.

However, I hear so many stories about griz eating people I a little tenative. Do I have to sleep with one eye open all the time or is it just a bunch of hype.

A US citizen only has to have a guide to hunt sheep, goats and griz/brown bear. If you're not from the US you have to have a guide to hunt any big game.
Some non-res get into trouble with the salvage requirements though. Moose are huge and you have to bring out all edible meat. Stiff fines and possible jail time if you don't.

the other thing is the cost of flying the meat home. big bucks!!! you can donate the meat. there are lots of little things you must think of before you get there! all the way down to what kind of bug dope you will use. rain gear that dont make much noise. what kind of boots you need. are they broke in. are they tall enoff. clothes do the layer efect right. a good coat day pac. your gun and how much more?? this all adds up. you need to know what sise of plane and how much space do i have. how much weight? i used to wax plaines in ketchikan ak. i have seen lots of stuff left on the dock. it may be a day before you see it. just somethings to think about better to have to much info. than not oakey

Thanks guys.

good info indeed.

I have most equipment I need, other than a butt load of game sacks for moose. Most gear I have is seasoned but in good shape.

Do need some good walkable waders though.

Will keep on researching.

Thanks.

Mark
