Hello,

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan with the Air Force in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
My brother and I are looking at a September Sitka Blacktail hunt on Prince of Wales Island upon my return.
Looking at the 2nd week. We are both avid hunters but have never hunted blacktails. We will be staying at a lodge and hunting out from there daily. (Need a little luxury after THIS deployment)

Any recommendations on tactics for this time of year? Will it be better to hit the beaches or the high country?

Any other tips from the black tail pros?

Thanks in advance!

first of all well come kid! 2nd thank you for what you are doing in afghanistan & and our country. i used to live on prince of whales island. in thorne bay & 12 mile arm. i seen more deer on shore line and the tide flats at low tide. look for game trails crossing the flats. find some high ground. do lots of glassing. the big thing is how far can you shoot? range finder is good. you will need good rain gear a must! it rains 12ft. a year there. 300 days of rain in one way or the other. in the bush hard hunting. the ground is steep muskag flats just like a big swamp. things are so thick you cant see. if you plan on useing a scope the flats or shore line. the bush open sights. on this sight you can read more what you will need for your hunt. you may check into a black bear tag to. you may see more bear than deer. agin thank you and the troops over there my hat is off to you all !!! oakey

I am no pro on blacktail (or any big game ) but I just got back from POW and can say we seen lots of sitka blacktails I talked to some of the locals and they said a lot of the deer are harvested on the clear cuts on the closed logging roads, in August and September

I here later in November they start comming around the beaches but we seen deer about everywhere they were just starting to grow antlers but I would say there was a lot of bucks but we could not tell if they would be good or not as it was to early to tell

Like the post from oakey I would look into a black bear tag as we seen 18 of them in 3 days and a couple where dandys my wife shot one on the 3rd day that will go 7' and the skull is right at 21"

Fishing should also be good there is a few charters out of Coffman Cove the one we went with was BIG B and we did very well it was $200 each for the day and he also set out shrimp traps and we got some really nice shrimp

Anyway my hat is off to you and your BROTHERS in arms come home and have a great time in AK
