Help with Alaska Moose DIY Hunt

A group of us are looking for direction. I have been reading and researching for two years and still have not narrowed down who to hire for a DIY moose hunt. I have read good (and bad) things about many of the outfitting services in AK and need some advice from the locals or NR who have experience. Can anyone recommend any outfitters or flying services that I could contact for a moose hunt. I initially wanted to do a ridgetop drop hunt but am now leaning towards a float hunt. I am open to suggestions though. Also, are there any areas that I need to shy away from due to low animal densities? What are the best areas for a NR?

I would recommend you call Larry Bartlett of Pristine Ventures. He is a hunt planner and does it well. I used him for a 20 day float hunt we did in 2003. He is well respected in Alaska. His web site is http://www.pristineventures.com/unguidedHuntPlanning.html

He also has a hunting forum geared to hunting Alaska that have some very knowledgable folks posting there.

Feel free to ask more questions as needed.

Good Luck,
Dave

Well I have sent an e-mail and have not had a reply, yet. Anybody else have any ideas? What is a better option a float hunt or a drop hunt?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I have done both types of moose hunts in AK. I was succesful on both hunts but I really enjoyed the float hunt more.
I also used Larry Bartlett in 2003.He set us up with a good air taxi service and sent us to a great area to hunt. We floated for 12 days and took two bull moose ,A 65" and a 51". I would highly recommend His services for a DIY hunt.I would also suggest that you get one or two of his books about hunting in AK.They are full of valuable info, things that you need to know to do a DIY hunt safley. I might add that we floated for about 100 river miles and only seen two legal bulls. Moose are not everywhere and if you get dropped in an area without moose around you could be very disappointed. I prefer to float and cover the country untill an area is found that has a lot of moose sign then set up camp and hunt the area for a few days doing alot of calling and long range spotting if possible.Just my opinon. Good hunting, Whaletail
