Wanting to do a Alaska moose hunt in 2010...trying to find a hunt where we can boat lakes or rivers. My old man is coming with us, so we want to be able to accomodate him by having boat to help us not have to hike or pack extrememly long distances...he has a super bum foot from an accident...So I was thinking a float hunt might help him out. Where can a guy find a good float moose hunt that will produce some decent bulls??? suggestions?

thanks

we were looking for unguided or guided...weighing the options based on quality hunt and price. Have you used Papa before...i will check out the site and see if i can find some references...anymore recommendations would be great.

Would you consider the Yukon or BC? I know of several great outfitters in both areas. Where your dad has a physcial limitation I would definitely suggest going guided. Moose are so big and hard to get around. Plus the meat cannot spoil, etc. Hard tremendous experiences in both BC and the Yukon. Had two friends do the unguided Alaska thing and they both had a great experience and both said they would not do it again. They were both in mid 20's and top top physical shape and they said it wa all they could do. To get the moose they had to leave the lake and go several miles away and bring them back a load at a time.

I would consider the yukon and probably BC as well. Would love your reccomendations...Sounds like you have hunted them both??? If my dad goes, he is not sure if he will hunt or not...but we are keeping that open...The other 3 of us that want to go are all in our early 30's and are in good shape. We hunt lions all winter and hunt shed all spring and hunt elk and deer all fall, so we do a lot of hiking. I know it will be tough, I have shot a moose in Idaho, although not near the size of the alaska moose, I know what you mean about packing....but we will consider a guided hunt. I appreciate your input and recommeandatons...would love to hear how your hunts went and what you saw and how the guides were...cost as well.

thanks,

I have hunted with Kawdy Outfitters (Stan & Bart Lancaster) several times in northern BC. Shot a mtn goat, moose and caribou with them. I have hunted with Rogue River in the Yukon. The best moose hunting there is. I shot a big moose and 2 wolves with them. I know that Dickson Outfitters and Tim Mervyn are also tremendous in the Yukon. Tim and Dickson offer horseback. Rogue River is all boat or argo. Kawdy is horse or lake. If you are after moose only, I would suggest the Yukon. Mixed bag, I would suggest BC. I know several others as well that are great and I would recommend. No matter where you go on any of these hunts the cost will be $12,000+. I have done lake hunting and horseback and in my mind there is no comparison between horses and a lake. I love the horseback type hunt. New country and miles and miles and miles of it each day. Lake hunting is just the same area for the entire hunt. Not that it is a bad thing but I want to see a bunch of country. I also hunted with Steve O'Brien in Alaska several years ago. Shot a big moose but it was a very primitive hunt. His plane did not have a back seat and I had to sit on my gear as a seat. Interesting but successful hunt. His apprentice guide was a full time trapper in the bush and one amazing individual. Let me know what other questions you have and I will pass on what I know.

I have used Papa Bear Adventures for moose, caribou, and bears. I even shot a bonus wolverine on one trip. Steve and his brother Karl are both pilots and live to hunt and fish. They know the area well and provide excellent service. On one trip our satellite phone arrived one day late and Papa Bear made an extra trip to deliver it to us. Not every air taxi will do that for you!!!!!!!!!!!!

great, thanks for the recommendations guys. I will check with all of the mentioned outfitters.

We had an incredible trip. Four guy went and we shot 4 bulls that were 54", 57", 63", and 66 inches. Mine was the 63 incher and needless to say I was one happy guy. I never expected that all four of us would get a nice bull but we did.
