My wife and I are booking a photography/fishing trip on Kodiak for next August. I'd like to throw in some additional site seeing for a few days before flying from Anchorage to Kodiak. Can anyone recommend some interesting stuff to see or do around Anchorage for a few days? We have considered taking the train to Denali and back but for the time and money we'd like to investigate other alternatives.

You might consider renting a car and driving down to Homer, then taking the ferry across to Kodiak. Spend the few days checking out Seward, Kenai, Soldotna, and Homer. The peninsula is unreal with beauty, fishing, and nice people.

It depends on what you want to do. As mentioned above, the drive down the Seward Highway is fantastic. You can probably stop off at the Russian River and hike up to the falls area and see some Bears if you're so inclined. The Silver Salmon will be running hot and heavy by then as well. Anchorage has some great fishing close by. The State Fair happens in Aug as well. You can take an ATV tour out and see the area or take a flight seeing trip out of Anchorage, Seward, Soldotna, or Homer. Anchorage also has a few nice museums too.

Again, its all in what you are interested in seeing.

Take care

Thanks for the feedback guys. I think we're going to drive down to Whittier and go out on Prince William Sound on one of our days. The second leg of the trip is bear photography and fishing on Kodiak so I think we'll get our fill of that over 5 days.
I think we may drive up and check out part of the Chugach while we're there as well.
We're pretty excited... only 8 and a half months to go...

There are endless places to hike, bike, whitewater rafting, fish ...etc in and around Anchorage where I live. You are only limited by time and money. You could take a sight seeing trip out of Seward (130 miles). Anchorage has an extensive bike trail systems throughout the city and into the adjacent mountains. If you are willing to hike you can see dall sheep, mountain goats, bears, ... etc very close to the city. Fishing for silvers will be available also.

....send your wife to a spa for an evening and you go to "The Great Alaskan Bush Company". Bring lots of $1's

great post/pic, thanks for sharing
