I'll be in cooper landing from april to october. I am a nonresident and bowhunt exclusively. What are my hunting options? Will I be able to hunt caribou or moose, or mostly just black bear?

OO,

Look for Big Moosie here on MM and send him a PM, he lives in Soldotna and should be able to give you the lowdown on what you can and can not hunt.
I drew a tag for MOOSE back about 20 years ago but the job seniority kept me from going, no one would let me change vacation time.

You have to draw a caribou tag. There are some real trophies on the kenai peninsula, but pretty hard to draw. There are general and draw moose areas, you'll have to do some research that way. I did some research on the east side of tustemena lake, you might look into there. Also the canoe lakes trails get some pressure, but is possible if you get far enough back. Tons of black bear options. Post this on Pristine Ventures forum and Alaska outdoor directories and see what you get. Beautiful country, wish I was there, but I'll be out of Bethel this year hunting moose. Good luck.

You should research the drawing permits for moose and caribou. Here is the link to the hunt supplement. The application period is the month of May and the results come out in mid July.

A lot of guys bait bears in the spring. You must be IBEP certified to hunt with a bow in units 7, and 14-16. You also have to complete the Fish & Game bear baiting clinic before you can set up a bait station. Here is the link for the classes.

The caribou on the Kenai are difficult to access but if you draw a permit and are willing to hike you could have a great hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-18-09 AT 09:16PM (MST)[p]i ain't sure about this but i thought the KP was off limits to nonres.. for moose.. either that or it is draw only..
i was doing some research for a moose hunt a couple of years ago,, and that just seems to stick in the back of my mind..

Ditto on what Zekers said.

Trophy bull Caribou available if you can draw the Fox or Killey river caribou hunt, however it is a backpack or horseback hunt, much like a wilderness elk hunt.

There is a draw great moose hunt on the Kenai as well.
Randy Ulmer took this giant there in 2003.

Oh what a phenomenal bull. Do you recall what it scored HH? I'd wet myself to see a bull of that caliber this fall.
