My dad and I are starting to look at self-guided caribou hunts next year. We have never done anything like this before so we have no idea where to start. Any advice about outfitters, gear, or anything else would be appreciated.
Thanks, Jim

Hey Jim,
A friend and I found ourselves heading to Alaska on a moose/ caribou hunt once and we did fine on our own. We hunted northeast of Fairbanks in an area we drove to. It was not the home of the largest herd in the state, nor was it a place one could shatter world records. The end results were we went home with our Caribou and Moose. We had a fantstic hunt we will always remember fondly. We did a little research such as you are doing now and away we went. I found the Alaska Dept. of Fish and Game to be of great help with up to date information on game locations in Fairbanks you can call them at 907-459-7206. I took a photo tour of a float that we did when we got our caribou, there is a map at the end of the slide show that gives you an idea of where we were. If you are interested you can view it at http://jeffalaska.com/galleries/birch_creek/index.html We saw more caribou and moose than we took home. The hunting was not restricted to remote flyin or floatin areas, Much of the huntable game we saw in roaded areas. If you want to know more of our trip send me an e-mail. Happy hunting

~Jeff~
