Wow! What a great hard-horned bull for this early in the year. Sure looks like he's got it all! I'm curious if you've rough-scored him.

Well I flew into Fairbanks and then drove up to Tok Ak. From there I flew out with a transport service called 40-mile air. Because of weather my hunt was cut really short, so I debated even taking my bow or not. I deceided to hunt with my bow for the first full day and if I hadn't got anything, I would change to a rifle for a little insurance. First day I hunted hard and blew a lot of stalks on an animal that seems to never stop moving...After 5 hours of attempts to get in bow range of a respectable bull I finally closed the distance to 40 yards of 4 nice bulls. I shot my bull in a huge patch of blueberry bushes, which was good for stalking, but horrible for a clear shot. As the caribou fed threw I steadied my pin on him and shot...I hit him a little forward, but to my surprise he dropped like a rock and died within seconds! I went threw the front of the shoulder blade and into both lungs...Then the work began!!!

I am an elk hunter from NM and have no idea how to score a caribou, but from what the locals tell me, he will make P&Y easily, and if he had a double shovel he would be flirting with the 400 inch mark! As soon as I get it officially scored I will be sure to post...

Thats a great looking bull! Congrats! Great field pic too!

How far north did 40 mile take you? Also why didn't you just fly to Tok since 40 mile flies to fairbanks twice a day.

If that baby had matching shovels...oh baby!!!!

I came in early to do a little sight seeing, and figured the 4 hour drive to Tok wouldn't be a bad way to see some more of the state! We were about 100 miles north I think, I was too busy taking it all in!!! I will definitley be back next year... I'm gonna do a moose hunt through 40-mile air next year!

Trapking,
Did you guys find any shed antlers to take home with you on your trip?

How many people went with you? Did you all get a caribou??

DETAILS man.

Leif and his crew are top notch. I'll be moose hunting with them next fall also.

We found a caribou skull that was bleached, and just left it there.

There was 4 in camp and 3 of us killed. I was the only one to hunt with a bow though. The 4th guy has been hunting with 40-mile since the 1980's and was holding out for a bull over 400. Leif is a cool dude, but Randy was my pilot this trip. They are awesome pilots and they don't take any chances when flying. I am gonna do a moose hunt next year also!

That thing is awesome.

So this was a DIY hunt? 40Mile only provided a lift to the hunting area?

If you don't mind, How much did 40mile air charge?

Here's mine. DIY September 6-18. Incredible adventure. Experienced everything you could imagine from great hunting to bears in camp, great weather, bad weather... I'm a non resident. This is my third DIY hunt to Alaska in the past 5 years. Going back next year for moose. Ed F

Yeah it was a DIY hunt, 40-mile air is just a transport service. It was like 2,000.00 to get flown in and picked up and then another 600.00 to bring your meat and rack out! Definitley manageable for such a great hunt!

Nice bulls and bucks. Super cool you guys r diy. Nice effort and thanks for sharing.

JRABQ that is an awesome trophy, congratulations! I definitley got that hunt on my bucket list!

Joe I don't remember any pm's from you in quite awhile bud!

Is it still just a single caribou, or were you hunting in an area where you can take 2?

All of your pics are awesome... I hunted Kodiak Island 2 years ago and it was gnarly! There was no heavy snow before we arrived so we spent the whole trip climbing the large hills in 6 foot tall grass. Once you got to the top, the vegetation was similar to your pics, but getting there took hours.

Looks like you guys all had a better experience than I did, but I'm still excited to go back as soon as I can.

couldn't find the right bear but I did my duty controling wolves for the 3rd year.
