Dall Sheep Hunt

I am wanting to book an Alaskan dall sheep hunt for fall of 2010. There seems to be a ton of outfitters out there so I am looking for recomendations. Also is there a go to website like an alaska outfitters association or something that lists all the outfitters and maybe perhaps there websites? I know for instance the wyoming guide and outfitters assoc. does this. Ultimately I would like to find a hunt that does not require expensive charter flights. Thanks in advance for the help.

Three of us just got back from hunting with Max Schwab out of Healy Alaska for Dall Sheep and Moose. One guy got his sheep on the first day, I got mine on the second afternoon and our buddy got his sheep the 5th day. The hunt fair exceeded our expectations. We are all planning on rebooking with Max in the near future.

Fairchase,

Congrats on your hunt. I hunted sheep in 07 with Max. Curtis was my guide, and Ryan was a packer at the time and was with us the whole time. Max does a good job of providing a great outdoor experience, plus he gets his clients on game !

Lets see some picks and maybe a story!

Thanks,

Bryan

LAST EDITED ON Sep-13-09 AT 10:58PM (MST)[p]I tried to email Max Schwab but the message came back with a "unable to deliver" notice. Guess I will have to give him a call. Sounds like you guys had great hunts with this outfitter.

In 1998 i hunted with Henry Tiffany here's his web site.
http://www.alaskanperimeter.com/
He runs 10 day hunts in the Brooks range. He videos the hunt and sends you a copy after the hunting season winds down. I shot a real nice 9 year old ram 36" long.

Wyo,

Attached is the picture of the ram I took on the 2nd day of my hunt with Max Schwab. We would have gotten him the first day but we had about an hour left in our stock when a grizzly came over the mountain and chased the sheep to a different mountain range a couple miles to the north. The guides were outstanding, I hunted with Ryan and my two buddies hunted with Tim and Curtis the other two guides. This was my third trip to Alaska in the last 4 years and the other two hunts were a complete diaster but with different outfitters. Max actually cares about his Hunters, Guides and Game. He doesn't over hunt his area and there is plenty of game. I seen over 200 sheep in 3 days. Max is tough to get ahold of until after sheep and moose season because he is constantly checking on all his hunters and guides. I'm not trying to persuage anyone's decision here but all I know is I had the trip of a lifetime and I'm going back to hunt with Max again.

Fairchase,

Beautiful ram ! Sounds like you guys really got into the sheep.
Was anyone hunting moose ?

I really liked Ryan on my hunt. His first asignment of an assistant guide was in 08, and I knew he was totally cut out for the job.

More pics please !!

Falcon,

Everyone had moose tags also. My buddies both shot there moose the first day a 54" and 58" bulls. I held out and seen 3 bulls that were over 60" but did not end up filling my tag. Ryan had me with in range of 7 legal bulls between 52-58" but I was picky and we had been seeing wolves, they had me side tracked. The last day I had my guide Ryan, Curtis and Wayne one of the other guides and packers and we spotted 14 wolves on a fresh kill so I passed on 2 very nice bulls that morning to try my chances for a wolf. The stalk took all day and they gave us the slip. Returning to camp with 2 hours left in my hunt I passed two more bulls a 54" and 58". Ryan done a great job he just had a picky hunter.

fairchase, Thank you for the input. Sounds like Max Schwab is the real deal. I just received an email from him and I will be giving him a call soon. I have been looking at High Adventure Air but am waiting for a phone call when the sheep season is over. Not sure if they are any good. I think contacting references seems to be a good way to find out info on the outfitters. Other than a safari in africa 8 years ago this will be my first guided hunt in north america and I want to do it right and not just waste my money.

Thanks all for the great help! I have a dall sheep hunt set up for next August. I can't wait, it should be a blast! One of my good friends and I are going with a friend of his that is a guide in alaska. He has his own plane and we will be flying into the brooks range, and all we have to pay for is the costs associated with getting to the hunting spot. I am very excited about going on a sheep hunt with a great friend and doing it more like a DIY hunt rather than the full on guided hunt. The guy taking us has been very successful on sheep hunts in the area we are going so it sounds pretty good. So thanks again for all the help and C'mon August 2010!

Just be sure he is licensed and you have a legit contract.
There has been BIG trouble in Alaska with transporters and others guiding hunters w/o proper licensing.
Non rez sheep, goat & brown bear hunters are mandated by law to hunt with a licensed guide.
You could get into a real legal bind if you don't have all your ducks in a row.
Saving a few bucks could cost you heavily in the long run.
Just be careful.
Hope it all works out.

HunterHarry, thanks for the concern. The hunt is on the up and up, nothing illegal. We will be sigining contracts shortly and if it was a shady dealing I wouldnt be having any part of it. Im sure there have been plenty of instances of people trying to get around the law.

My friends hunted with Max in 2004 and both shot Dall Sheep and that was the year of the terrible fires where visibility was terrible. They are hunted back for Sheep and Moose in 2010. Highly recommended and they have hunted with a bunch of outfitters. Max is a man of few words but is a tremendous pilot and knows his stuff. It is a backpack hunt and don't expect Hilton or Marriott type of accomodations but you will see and get your animals.

Henry Tiffany has turned into one of Alaskas biggest scam artists. Do your own research carefully before considering booking with him. I wouldn't trust him for a second.
