Adak

I was thinking about an Adak caribou hunt this fall, has anyone done one?

out of all the places to go hunt caribou why did you pick adak?

I looked at hunting Adak and discovered that at one time it was a secret honey hole that has since been overhunted. Logistically tough to get to. It's supposed to now be a tough hunt with small bulls and some of the worst weather on the planet!

Although, Jim Shokey had a reindeer show about some Alutian Island that he now has the consession on and the bulls that were filmed were incredible. Probably a high dollar hunt. Ed F

LAST EDITED ON Dec-28-09 AT 05:31PM (MST)[p]I did a lot of research on Adak Island and have found a couple of outfitters and the DIY method. Most of the stories from those who have been there say that it's mainly a meat hunt. Adak is very expensive to get to.

There was a recent show of Larry Csonka... where he was hunting on Atka Island. I checked it out after seeing the show, probably with thousands of other people. The island is very remote and would cost a lot just to get there and back, then you figure in the cost to hunt.

I've heard negative things about every caribou hunt out there. All of the big herds are supposed to have a very small amount of shooter bulls and everyone says they are mainly meat hunts.

I think any of these hunts will allow you a decent chance to get a nice bou... as long as you're not "expecting" to take a B&C trophy.

If it were me... I'd stick to the northern herd. It's a lot cheaper and you'll probably see a significantly higher number of animals, which means you'll have a significantly higher opportunity for a big bull.
