Prince Of Whales Bear Hunt

Me and some friends are thinking about a DIY Bear/Blacktail Hunt on prince of whales Island. We are going to drive up so we will have a vehicle. We are planning on camping once we get there. Has anyone done this before? Any advice? What are some of the things we may not think of? Any good places to camp, rent a skiff? We also might consider a place to stay/boat rental for a reasonable price. Thanks in advance for any help

My recommnedation would be to go to www.outdoorsdirectory.com and do a search to locate info on your question. I would then post your question on the forums there since it is dedicated to Alaska hunting, fishing, and the gear required to successfully enjoy the state.

There will be many posts about POW Island. Here is one I found in a few moments of searching, though it doesn't specifically address your question:

Don't be afraid to ask questions. On this forum, someone has usually been there, done that (usually many someones) and are willing to give up some good info, but obviously, not their "honey holes".

Here is another idea. There is a forum member named Gooch who owns/operates Coffman Cove. He provides lodging, food, boat or vehicle for a set price. Here is the link: http://www.coffmancoveak.com/

The last I heard, I believe it was around $1500. I cannot remember if it is 5 or 7 days. I have heard good things about his operation, but have not personally hunted there.

Good luck and let us know what you end up doing/how you did when you finally do it.

Take care,
Garion

I've done that hunt just as you describe it - send me a PM and I'll give you some pointers. Wife took a 21" and I passed; packing out one bear was good for me.

ARCHRYBLL, when are you looking to go up there?

We are trying to get a plan together too. We are actually thinking of going up in Sept but now with the new law there about not being able to use a vehicle to hunt bear in Sept, we may look at August.

I'm not clear on the law I still have to call the local G & F office there to clarify but it sounds like you have to hunt directly out of your cabin, can't drive to an area and then get out to hunt. No we are not road hunters just makes it more difficult.

Guys thanks for the info! Elknut I will shoot you a PM asap thanks for the offer.

Mntman We were also thinking about going in sept, but like you said that law is crazy. We also are not road hunters either but I also would like some clarification of that law. We are now thinking either last week of Aug. or first week of oct. I think that new law if it is as strict as it sounds will make Aug and oct really busy! Were are you guys leaving from? Are you flying or driving?

We are looking at driving. There will at least be 2 maybe up to 4 guys. I want to do it this year but don't know if there will be openings or enough time for the other guys to plead with their wives ;-) If not this year it will be in 2012 cause we already have a moose trip to AK planned for next year :)
I live in CO, my dad will drive here fom Minnesota and then after a short break we'll head out.

I went to POW to fish and hunt bears four years ago. Took my 9 year old daughter. Bear hunting was a bust as we just couldn't stop yacking and certainly made too much noise. We didn't hunt that hard unfortunately and I had no idea what I was doing.

If I were to do it again I'd follow the same regular rules for anything else: GET OFF THE ROAD and hunt till dark, walk out with a head lamp. We took two hikes several miles back on a river and saw tons and tons of sign. Check out google earth for rivers off the road that have open hill sides to glass.

I'd also go in the fall and get a deer tag. You couldn't swing a cat and not hit a deer. They were everywhere. One dropped a fawn in front of our truck on a logging road near Craig. We had to wait for it to learn to walk to get off the road. If you sat down to glass for bear and used the fawn bleat no bears would come but you'd be up to your armpits in deer.

Fishing was awesome and we're going again late next week to Thorne Bay. Not bear hunting this time.

just a heads up, if you didnt know..you can no longer use the road system to hunt bear in the fall on POW.
