We are headed to Alaska! My dad, grandpa, brother, and myself are headed to Ketchikan in August to do some fishing. We'll be there about a week, with possibly one or two days without fishing. What else is there to do/see while we are in Ketchikan? I wish we could do some hunting, but that will have to wait until our next trip to AK. What kind of wildlife can we expect to see while there?

You could get a Deer tag as Deer season opens on August 1st. Hike the mountains above town.

You might see Mt Goats up on Deer Mt but that is a draw area and you need a Guide for Goats.

Black bear doesn't open till Sept 1st.

Realistically a one or 2 day hunt is a slim chance but you never know.

There is lots of touristy and some interesting things to see and do. Check out Creek street and the SE Visitors (USFS) center downtown. And the 2 Totem parks are interesting, one south and one north of town. Go out to Herring Cove at the King Salmon hatchery in late evening and you could spot a bear.

You could also stream / lake fish at Ward Lake and the stream that leads into it.

Thanks
I don't think we'll have time to fit a hunt in, unfortunately, but some of the other things you listed sound interesting.

Anyone else have anything to add? We leave in less than two weeks...
